Auburn stuns No. 1 Georgia on McPherson walk-off field goal

Byrum Brown accounted for two touchdowns as the Tigers outlasted the Bulldogs 27-24 in Athens.

Alex McPherson’s walk-off field goal gave Auburn a 27-24 victory over No. 1 Georgia in Athens during Week 7, handing the Bulldogs their first loss of the season and upending the SEC hierarchy.

The kick set off a rush onto the field. Teammates hoisted McPherson into the air while the stadium fell quiet. For head coach Alex Golesh, the upset validated a specific philosophy he has pushed since arriving at Auburn: treating every snap as a finite chance that will not come around again.

“You have a limited amount of opportunities in your life,” Golesh told reporters after the game. “You have to be able to capitalize on the opportunities you get, and it’s in football, it’s in life.”

Georgia actually outgained Auburn 440 yards to 366. The yardage advantage meant nothing against a Tigers offense built around quarterback Byrum Brown’s legs. Brown threw for 150 yards and one touchdown, then added 115 rushing yards and another score on the ground, consistently breaking containment against a defense that had suffocated opponents all year.

Kirby Smart, who has won two national championships at Georgia and rarely loses unranked non-conference or early SEC matchups, did not hide his frustration. He spoke about the need for humility following the defeat, acknowledging his defense failed to contain Brown when the game tightened in the fourth quarter.

Toppling the No. 1 team on the road is historically rare in modern college football. Programs that pull off such upsets often struggle with the subsequent emotional hangover, a pattern Golesh will have to manage immediately.

Auburn travels to face LSU in Week 8. The Tigers now sit squarely in the SEC title race, holding a signature road win that reshapes the College Football Playoff picture heading into late October.
