Apple’s $1,999 Foldable iPhone Duo Ditches Face ID, Uses A20 Pro and C2 Modem

CUPERTINO, Calif. — Apple Inc. has officially entered the foldable device market with the announcement of the iPhone Duo, an ultra-premium handset featuring a 2-nanometer A20 Pro application processor, a custom-designed C2 cellular modem, and a starting price of $1,999 in the United States.

The device marks a major engineering shift for Apple, introducing silicon architecture inspired by its M-series Mac chips alongside internal structural innovations aimed at making the foldable screen durable and flat. For biometric security, Apple opted to bypass Face ID on the foldable model in favor of a reinstated Touch ID sensor. Originally introduced on the iPhone 5s in 2013 and later transitioned to power-button implementations on the iPad Air and iPad mini, the touch-based fingerprint reader on the iPhone Duo supports multi-fingerprint enrollment.

At the core of the device is the A20 Pro system-on-chip, manufactured on a 2-nanometer semiconductor process node. The processor incorporates a 6-core central processing unit—comprising two high-performance “super-cores” designed for desktop-grade workloads—and a 7-core graphics processing unit. Built with a titanium chassis, carbon fiber internal support plates, and dual-cell battery construction, the iPhone Duo stands as the thinnest smartphone Apple has produced to date, achieved by reallocating internal components around its rear camera housing.

The structural design of the iPhone Duo centers on a passport-style folding form factor containing two distinct displays. The internal flexible panel measures 7.6 inches diagonally—making it the largest display ever deployed on an iPhone—while the exterior cover display measures 5.4 inches. Apple confirmed that the iPhone Duo will support the USB-C Apple Pencil for drawing and note-taking, marking the first time an iPhone has offered native stylus support since the line was launched in 2015.

In terms of ingress protection, the iPhone Duo carries an IP68 certification for water and dust resistance, placing its environmental durability on par with flagship non-folding smartphones. While early foldable devices in the mobile industry lacked dust protection due to complex hinge mechanisms, the iPhone Duo joins hardware such as the Pixel 10 Pro Fold and Pixel 11 Pro Fold in offering full IP68-rated sealing. The handset also integrates Apple’s proprietary C2 modem, continuing the company’s long-term initiative to transition away from third-party cellular modems following its 2019 acquisition of Intel’s smartphone modem division.

To address screen crease visibility and glare, Apple implemented a specialized nanotextured glass layer across the inner screen, a material treatment previously utilized on high-end hardware such as the Pro Display XDR and select iPad Pro models. The rear camera module features a 48-megapixel Fusion primary sensor paired with a 12-megapixel 2x telephoto lens, complemented by a 12-megapixel front camera. Photographers and content creators can utilize the outer cover display as a real-time viewfinder when taking pictures or recording video with the main camera array.

Underneath the main flexible panel, Apple integrated a “FaceTime camera” hidden behind active pixels. The display pixels above the lens automatically turn off or shift brightness when the sensor is engaged for video calls or self-portraits, obscuring the hardware when not in use. The hardware runs an adapted version of iOS 27, structured specifically for split-screen operation and multi-window productivity. On both the external 5.4-inch display and the expanded 7.6-inch interior panel, the primary app dock is repositioned vertically along the right edge of the interface.

When unfolded, the device supports side-by-side app execution, a semi-folded tabletop view, and an upgraded StandBy mode. Software capability for the Apple Pencil is scheduled to be deployed via an over-the-air update later in the year, likely toward the end of 2026. Pre-orders for the iPhone Duo open on October 16 at 5:00 a.m. Pacific Time (14:00 CEST), with retail availability and customer deliveries commencing October 23. The device will be sold in two color options: White and Night Sky.

In the U.S. market, the 256GB base configuration starts at $1,999, with higher-capacity variants available in 512GB, 1TB, and a top-tier 2TB model priced at $3,199. European pricing for the handset starts at €2,339 for the 256GB model, rising to €2,589 for 512GB, €3,089 for 1TB, and €3,839 for the 2TB storage configuration.
