Abdul-Malik Olajuwon Commits to SMU Basketball, Becomes Andy Enfield’s First 2027 Recruit
The 6-foot-5 guard ranked No. 57 nationally chose Andy Enfield's program after an official visit to Dallas, joining his brother Aziz as a high-profile collegiate prospect.

Andy Enfield has landed his first commitment for the 2027 recruiting class, securing a pledge from Abdul-Malik Olajuwon, a 6-foot-5 guard ranked No. 57 nationally in the SC Next 100. The decision gives SMU an immediate foundational piece as the program continues building its roster under Enfield’s direction following his arrival from USC in 2024.
Olajuwon confirmed his commitment Thursday after an official campus visit last weekend that included watching the Mustangs defeat Missouri State in football. His father, NBA Hall of Fame center Hakeem Olajuwon, accompanied him on the trip. Minnesota was the only other school Olajuwon visited officially before making his choice.
The Dallas-based program holds distinct geographic appeal for Olajuwon, a Texas native currently playing at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. SMU’s transition into the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2024 elevated the basketball program’s national profile and recruiting ceiling, positioning the Mustangs to compete directly with established ACC powers rather than operating within their former American Athletic Conference footprint.
Enfield plans to deploy Olajuwon primarily as a point guard who can contribute immediately as a freshman while anchoring perimeter defense. That specific schematic fit drove the recruitment. Olajuwon noted that Enfield’s communication style — demanding attention without raising his voice — resonated during their time together on campus.
Physically, Olajuwon projects as a versatile two-way player largely because of a 6-foot-11 wingspan. That length allows him to disrupt passing lanes, generate deflections and secure rebounds from the backcourt. Analytics service Cerebro tracked his shooting efficiency during the final Nike EYBL session in Las Vegas this past summer, where he connected on 40.7 percent of his three-point attempts. Across 20 games playing for JL3 on the EYBL circuit, he averaged 12.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists.
Scouting evaluations emphasize his processing speed and spatial awareness over raw athleticism. He reads defensive rotations quickly, opting for high-percentage passes or open shots rather than forcing difficult attempts. Adding core and upper-body strength remains the primary developmental objective heading into his final year of high school, a necessary step to finish through contact against larger collegiate defenders.
College basketball recruitment runs deep in the family. Olajuwon’s older brother, Aziz, a top-100 prospect in the 2026 class, is set to begin his freshman season at Stanford. Their father won the 1983 college Player of the Year award at the University of Houston before capturing back-to-back NBA championships with the Houston Rockets, earning league MVP honors in 1994 and collecting 12 All-Star selections over his career.
Olajuwon’s pledge makes him the lone member of SMU’s 2027 signing class as of early October.
