Mbappé Strikes Twice as Real Madrid Overcome Rayo’s Second-Half Surge

MADRID — Real Madrid moved to 12 points from five La Liga fixtures after defeating capital rivals Rayo Vallecano 4-1 at the Santiago Bernabéu on matchday five. The result leaves Carlo Ancelotti’s side level with Barcelona at the top of the table, although Barcelona have played one fewer match.

Kylian Mbappé’s second goal arrived deep into stoppage time, when Turkish international Arda Güler came off the bench and set up the French forward for a finish past Rayo goalkeeper Emil Audero. The brace took Mbappé’s tally to seven goals in six appearances across all competitions since his high-profile summer move from Paris Saint-Germain to the Spanish capital.

Rayo, coached by Íñigo Pérez, had already been forced to defend a penalty in the 14th minute. Defender Álvaro Carreras drove into the area before Florian Lejeune brought him down, and Mbappé sent Audero the wrong way from the spot to open the scoring.

Three minutes later, Carreras became the scorer rather than the creator. Vinícius Júnior dispossessed Lejeune deep in Rayo’s defensive third, after which Carreras exchanged a quick one-two with Mbappé and placed a low shot beyond Audero for a 2-0 lead in the 17th minute.

Barcelona also have 12 points and are scheduled to face Levante on Sunday. Before that fixture, Real Madrid had built a three-goal advantage against Rayo, with Vinícius beating his defender on the left wing shortly before halftime and delivering a precise cut-back for Jude Bellingham. The midfielder scored his third goal of the season, while Mbappé saw another effort rebound off the post in the closing minutes of the half.

The visitors responded in the 51st minute after capitalizing on a turnover in Madrid’s midfield. Sergio Camello, who starred for Spain in their gold-medal victory at the 2024 Paris Olympics, beat Thibaut Courtois to reduce the deficit to 3-1.

Pedro Díaz then rattled the post with a long-range attempt as Rayo searched for another goal. Courtois was also forced into a series of crucial saves to protect Real Madrid’s lead. The goalkeeper had missed most of the previous season with a severe knee injury before returning to win the UEFA Champions League.

Mbappé’s clinical finishing anchored Real Madrid’s dominant performance, but Rayo’s early second-half pressure briefly changed the flow of the match. The final score remained 4-1 after Güler’s late assist allowed Mbappé to complete his brace.
