Haaland Wins Manchester Derby After Foden Red Card and VAR Drama

MANCHESTER, England — Erling Haaland’s 60th-minute goal gave 10-man Manchester City a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the 191st Manchester derby at Old Trafford. The result preserved City’s perfect start to the Premier League season and delivered a fourth consecutive win under new manager Enzo Maresca.

Manchester United controlled much of the early possession but struggled to create clear chances inside the penalty area, relying mainly on long-range efforts. City maintained its defensive cohesion despite playing a man down, with center-back Marc Guehi and goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma helping United remain scoreless.

The disciplinary turning point came earlier, when referee Michael Oliver sent off City midfielder Phil Foden. Bruno Fernandes had tripped Foden while Foden was on the turf, and Foden responded by kicking Fernandes in the stomach. Oliver immediately showed Foden a red card, while Fernandes received no disciplinary action for the initial challenge.

Foden became the first Manchester City player sent off in a derby since Dec. 9, 2006, when Italian forward Bernardo Corradi was dismissed during a 3-1 loss to United at Old Trafford.

United twice came close to taking the lead through shots that struck the goalposts. Marcus Rashford curled a free-kick against the left post in first-half stoppage time, and eight minutes into the second half, Kobbie Mainoo’s long-range attempt from the edge of the penalty box rebounded off the post and then Donnarumma before being cleared.

Haaland’s goal followed an extended VAR review after the assistant referee initially raised an offside flag. Josko Gvardiol sent a swift cross from the left wing, and a deflection inside the penalty box forced Haaland to adjust his position at close range before redirecting the ball into the top-left corner past United goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

The video officials confirmed that United defender Patrick Dorgu’s trailing right foot played Haaland onside. They also reviewed City midfielder Enzo Fernandez’s position: Fernandez was offside while attacking the delivery alongside United defender Lisandro Martinez, but the panel determined that he neither touched the ball nor interfered with Martinez’s ability to play it. The goal therefore stood under International Football Association Board offside regulations.

After Haaland put City ahead, United brought forward Benjamin Sesko on to strengthen the attack. City nearly added a second when Lammens tipped a long-range effort from Fernandez onto the crossbar, while Bryan Mbeumo headed wide at the other end.

City’s lead left it tied with defending champion Arsenal at the top of the Premier League standings on 12 points. Manchester United remained on four points through four matches, eight points off the pace in manager Michael Carrick’s first full season in charge.

Haaland later missed a chance to double the advantage, sending a close-range attempt from a Fernandez cross wide with Guehi nearby. United’s final opportunity came when Fernandes played a pass through to an unmarked Mbeumo in the penalty area, but Donnarumma stopped the point-blank attempt to secure the victory.
