Diablo Sets 2029 Game Window as Netflix Animated Series Moves Forward

Netflix series and 2029 game continue Diablo’s long multimedia expansion

Blizzard Entertainment is taking Diablo into streaming entertainment while setting a spring 2029 target window for the franchise’s next mainline video game. The property debuted in 1996 under Blizzard North, and the planned animated television series represents a formal collaboration with Netflix.

Netflix’s video game adaptation lineup already includes productions based on Castlevania, Cyberpunk 2077, and League of Legends. Blizzard has not disclosed production milestones, animation studios, or a premiere date for the Diablo series, but confirmed that development is underway with the statement, “Sanctuary’s darkness is spreading.”

Reports about an animated adaptation have circulated for years. Production disclosures in 2020 pointed toward an anime-style treatment of the gothic franchise, while Blizzard has also indicated that television and film adaptations could expand to other core properties in its catalog, including Warcraft and Overwatch.

The next Diablo game is planned for spring 2029, six years after Diablo IV launched in June 2023. Promotional teaser material released by Blizzard indicates that the forthcoming title will directly follow the fourth installment’s narrative events, which centered on the conflict involving the demon Lilith and the world of Sanctuary.

The franchise has previously gone through lengthy development periods between numbered releases. Diablo II arrived in 2000, followed by Diablo III 12 years later in 2012. Diablo IV then came after an 11-year gap. During those intervals, Blizzard supported the intellectual property with expansions, remastered editions such as 2021’s Diablo II: Resurrected, and the 2022 mobile co-development Diablo Immortal.

The broader media push comes while Blizzard operates under Microsoft’s gaming division. Microsoft completed its $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard in October 2023, and the Netflix project is Blizzard’s most prominent screen project since the 2016 live-action Warcraft feature film.

That Warcraft film was produced with Legendary Pictures and distributed theatrically by Universal Pictures. Blizzard’s next mainline Diablo release remains targeted for spring 2029.
