Pochettino’s USMNT youth push hits Fort Lauderdale in December
Thirteen players debuted in October as the head coach accelerates the roster overhaul ahead of Nations League and 2030 qualifying.

Thirteen debutants in four friendlies. An 8-0-5 record this year. A contract extension through the summer of 2030 locked in. Mauricio Pochettino is not treating the post-World Cup window as a cooldown period for the U.S. Men’s National Team. He is using it to gut and rebuild the roster before CONCACAF qualifying begins.
The next stress test arrives Dec. 13 against Jamaica at Inter Miami CF Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The venue — recently vacated by the MLS franchise’s first team — will host what the federation frames as a friendly but functions as an audition. Pochettino explicitly pointed to MLS-based players and uncapped prospects as the focus, according to statements released by the team.
“As we continue to build our group, this is an excellent opportunity to work with many of the MLS players and potentially see some new faces,” Pochettino said. “Jamaica is the type of team we could see in upcoming tournaments including World Cup Qualifying, so it’s a great opportunity and experience for these players.”

That qualifier matters. The U.S. advanced to the Round of 16 on home soil this summer, securing its first FIFA World Cup knockout-stage win since 2002 before falling to Belgium. But hosting duties guaranteed that spot. Future tournaments require navigating the same regional gauntlet where Jamaica remains a persistent obstacle, despite the Americans holding a 22-10-3 all-time edge across 35 meetings.
The immediate schedule leaves no room for experimentation without consequence. Before Fort Lauderdale, the USMNT faces Haiti in the Nations League quarterfinals on Nov. 14 at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica, and Nov. 17 at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati. Those matches determine whether the U.S. reaches the March 2027 semifinals at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.
Cavan Sullivan, Julian Hall, and Mathis Albert were among the teenagers handed caps during the October international break against Chile, Peru, Mexico, and Canada. All four opponents fell to the U.S. in Pochettino’s first camp following his contract extension. Whether those specific players make the November roster for the Haiti ties remains the central question for American fans tracking the transition from the 2026 World Cup cycle to the 2030 campaign.

Jamaica last beat the U.S. in a 1-0 result at Audi Field in Washington, D.C., in the summer of 2019. Since then, the Americans have won both legs of their most recent Nations League pairing in November 2024 by scores of 4-2 and 1-0. The Reggae Boyz are now being used as a measuring stick for players who were still in high school when that 2019 upset happened.
The host nation for the next Gold Cup has yet to be named, while 2030 World Cup qualifying is scheduled to commence toward the end of 2027. That timeline explains why Pochettino is running 14 matches in a single calendar year rather than resting veterans after a World Cup exit.
