Amazon Prices Alexa+ Higher Than Prime, Making AI Assistant a Retention Tool
Standalone subscription costs more than Prime, making AI assistant a membership retention tool

Amazon’s decision to price its new generative AI assistant at $19.99 per month — $5 more than a full Prime subscription — signals that Alexa+ exists primarily to lock customers into the company’s membership ecosystem rather than compete as a standalone AI product.
The pricing structure, confirmed on Amazon’s website, creates an obvious economic incentive: for $14.99 monthly or $139 annually, Prime members receive Alexa+ alongside free shipping, Prime Video, Amazon Music, and Kindle benefits. The standalone Alexa+ subscription offers only the assistant.
“The standalone price is deliberately uncompetitive,” said a former Amazon devices executive who requested anonymity. “It’s designed to make Prime look like the only rational choice.”
Alexa+, launched in 2025, runs on large language models from Anthropic and Amazon’s internal Nova suite. The system uses what Amazon calls “experts” — modular groups of APIs and instructions that handle specific task categories — to coordinate across tens of thousands of services and devices, according to the company.
Third-party integrations with Ticketmaster, Uber, Grubhub, and OpenTable enable agentic functions like booking concert tickets, reserving restaurant tables, and scheduling rides in a single request. Four personality modes — Brief, Chill, Sweet, and Sassy — let users adjust conversational tone.
Early adopters report significant limitations. The assistant suffers from consistency errors requiring user verification, excessive verbosity, functional memory lapses, and noticeable latency. Daniel Rausch, Amazon’s VP of Alexa and Echo, acknowledged growing pains in an interview with TechRadar.
Full access remains limited to the United States and Canada. Early access programs operate in Mexico, the UK, Brazil, Italy, Germany, Austria, France, Australia, Spain, and India, with capabilities varying by region. Prime members can activate the upgrade by saying “Alexa, upgrade to Alexa plus” on compatible Echo devices, Fire TV products, and Fire tablets.
