Cumberland’s Coburn leads RI girls soccer Player of the Week poll
Cumberland's Sofia Coburn and four other Rhode Island high school standouts are on the ballot as the regular season enters its final full week.

Five high school athletes are competing for The Providence Journal Girls Soccer Player of the Week honor, with voting open through Saturday night. The online poll follows last week’s selection of Coventry’s Taylor DeVerna, who secured 54.4% of more than 20,000 ballots after scoring in three consecutive matches.
Sofia Coburn headlines this week’s nominees. The Cumberland forward scored twice to erase a deficit against Barrington, finishing a 3-2 comeback victory. She also contributed during a chaotic 5-5 draw with Lincoln on Saturday, part of a stretch where the Clippers have relied heavily on late-game production to stay near the top of Division I.

Eva Corriveau earned her nomination by netting both goals in North Smithfield’s 2-1 win over Ponaganset. The result carries significant weight for postseason positioning. North Smithfield currently trails only Scituate — which holds a 13-0-2 record — in the Division II standings, and knocking off the No. 2 seed alters the bracket math heading into the final week of the regular season.

Lincoln’s Danika Denham is the third nominee. She scored two early goals in a 3-1 victory that snapped North Kingstown’s 10-match unbeaten streak. Lincoln followed that performance with a 1-0 shutout of Portsmouth before playing Cumberland to that 5-5 tie, extending their own lengthy run without a defeat. The Lions have surged into third place in Division I, trailing only La Salle and Cumberland.

Mya Kafalas represents Burrillville in the poll. She opened the week with a goal in a 2-1 home victory over Exeter-West Greenwich and added two more in a 5-3 win, keeping the Broncos positioned for a favorable seed in the upcoming Division II playoffs. Burrillville sits behind Scituate, Ponaganset, North Smithfield and Pilgrim in the current hierarchy.

East Greenwich’s Maeve Monaghan rounds out the field. The Avengers swept all three of their matches last week, with Monaghan recording a goal and an assist during a 3-0 blanking of South Kingstown. East Greenwich remains at .500 or better in Division I, clustered alongside North Kingstown, Mt. Hope, Portsmouth, Barrington, Chariho and Prout fighting for playoff positioning.

The weekly recognition operates independently of Rhode Island’s official postseason awards. It does not factor into All-State selections or the Player of the Year honors distributed at the annual June ceremony downtown. Coaches and athletic administrators submit results directly to the Providence Journal sports desk via email at pjsports@providencejournal.com between 6 and 10 p.m. on weekdays, or by phone at (401) 277-7340. Submissions from parents, family members or club coaches are not accepted.
La Salle currently holds the top spot in Division I. The Rams host Smithfield and visit Barrington this week while attempting to hold off Cumberland, which handed La Salle its lone loss earlier in the 2026 season. In Division III, Cranston East hosts Mount Pleasant before traveling to Max Read Field on Thursday to face Pawtucket Co-op. Two wins would lock up the regular-season crown for the Thunderbolts, who lead Bay View, Providence Country Day and Davies in the standings.
Voting for this week’s award concludes Saturday night. Phone calls, emails and social media contact will not be tallied.
