DC Guard Member Shot Intervening in Street Fight
Interim Chief Jeffery Carroll says the suspect was also wounded after troops stepped into a physical altercation Sunday night.

A National Guard member deployed in Washington, D.C., was shot Sunday night while attempting to break up a physical altercation, according to D.C. Metropolitan Police Department Interim Chief Jeffery Carroll. The suspect involved in the gunfire was also shot.
Carroll said Guard members intervened in a fight when the shooting occurred. He did not release the identities of those wounded or detail their conditions. No charges have been announced.
Military personnel patrolling the capital remains a visible fixture following surges in federal deployments authorized under recent administrations to assist local law enforcement with street-level crime. These service members generally operate without arrest powers, functioning as an observational deterrent rather than a direct policing force—a legal boundary that complicates responses when troops step into active violence.
The incident marks one of the rare instances of a deployed Guard member being struck by gunfire during a domestic support mission in the district. Federal and local investigators are working the scene together, though MPD retains primary jurisdiction over the criminal probe, officials said.
