Juventus face 72-hour turnaround against unbeaten Lazio

A suspended Spalletti and a brutal travel schedule test Juventus against Gattuso's surprising title challengers.

Juventus landed in Turin at 4:30 a.m. Friday following a Europa League victory over Celta Vigo in Spain. Less than 72 hours later, Luciano Spalletti’s squad faces a Lazio team that has lost exactly once in six Serie A matches this season.

Spalletti will not be on the sideline. The head coach received a red card after an altercation with Cagliari manager Fabio Pisacane last weekend, forcing assistant Marco Domenichini to direct operations while Spalletti watches from the stands. The logistical squeeze is severe. Juventus are attempting to stabilize a domestic campaign defined by inconsistency against a Roma-based club that has quietly accumulated points without dominating possession or shot volume.

Lazio average 13.5 shots per game, ranking 12th in Serie A. They have scored 11 goals through six matches, eight originating from open play. Rino Gattuso, who replaced Igor Tudor during the summer, built a pragmatic structure that does not rely on controlling the ball. Defending champions Inter Milan sit level on points with them at the top of the table. Opta’s predictive models project Lazio finishing sixth by May, but those algorithms struggled similarly with Juventus last year, forecasting a third-place finish that never materialized.

Randal Kolo Muani has registered five goal contributions across his last five appearances in all competitions since returning to Turin in 2025. His output spikes specifically when paired with Nick Woltemade. Spalletti refused to commit to starting both strikers together during Saturday’s press conference, noting the decision depends on how the match develops. Woltemade remained on the bench during the opening phases of recent fixtures, leaving Kolo Muani isolated up front until tactical adjustments were made late in games. Both forwards scored via back-post crosses in consecutive matches against Cagliari and Celta Vigo.

Jérémie Boga returns to the matchday squad after missing time since the early September draw against Milan. Spalletti limited his availability to roughly 30 minutes off the bench. Kenan Yildiz, Manuel Locatelli, Khephren Thuram, Jeff Ekhator and Kamil Grabara remain unavailable. Edon Zhegrova, who drove the second-half comeback in Spain, could start if Domenichini determines the attacking balance holds. Douglas Luiz and Pape Matar Sarr are expected to anchor the midfield pivot. Goalkeeper Neto completed his suspension carried over from Brazil and sat on the bench Thursday.

The Allianz Stadium fixture kicks off Sunday, Oct. 18, 2026, at 8:45 p.m. local time. Telemundo carries the broadcast in the United States alongside streaming coverage on Paramount+ and Peacock. TNT Sports 1 airs the match in the United Kingdom, with DAZN handling distribution in Canada and Italy.
