AI Agents Made 138M Crypto Payments on Coinbase’s x402

Sub-cent stablecoin transfers bypass traditional card networks as Visa, Mastercard and BlackRock prepare for machine-to-machine commerce.

Autonomous software programs have executed more than 138 million cryptocurrency transactions through Coinbase’s x402 protocol, signaling that machine-to-machine commerce is moving from experimental pilot to active infrastructure on blockchain networks.

The volume, tracked by Chainalysis on Base — Coinbase’s layer-2 Ethereum scaling network — surged from roughly 1,500 cumulative payments in mid-2025 to over 138 million by the third quarter of 2026. The growth reflects a structural shift in how developers provision resources for artificial intelligence models, bypassing traditional billing cycles to purchase compute power, live web data and API access instantaneously.

Traditional payment rails cannot process these exchanges. More than 87% of the recorded x402 transactions fell between one-hundredth of a cent and 10 cents. Credit card networks impose fixed interchange fees that instantly erase the margins on sub-cent transfers, making stablecoins the only viable settlement layer for automated micro-purchases. This technical reality explains why major payment incumbents are racing to build parallel crypto-native agent infrastructure rather than adapting existing card networks.

Visa, Mastercard and Stripe have all introduced frameworks to support AI-agent payments this year. Google recently published its own dedicated protocol for agent transactions, while Coinbase expanded its commercial tools to allow businesses to directly accept automated agent payments. BlackRock’s head of digital assets research, Will Su, identified autonomous agents as a potential catalyst for continuous, low-value crypto demand operating around the clock.

Geographically, wallets linked to the United States generated 88.1% of identifiable x402 payments tied to AI model inference. Chinese-linked wallets accounted for just 0.1% of inference spending but dominated expenditures for security and code-analysis services. Chainalysis noted these figures represent only identifiable activity routed through the specific x402 standard, not total global agent commerce.

Raw transaction counts require scrutiny. Blockchain analytics firm TRM Labs previously warned that high volumes of purported agent activity on similar payment rails frequently consist of deterministic scripts, automated testing loops or self-dealing wallet transfers rather than genuinely autonomous decision-making software. Distinguishing an independent AI agent executing a novel economic task from a scheduled cron job remains technically difficult using purely on-chain data.

Base processes millions of daily transactions across decentralized finance applications, but the concentration of sub-cent machine payments introduces new stress tests for network throughput and state management that differ fundamentally from human-driven trading volume. As of October 2026, Coinbase continues to expand x402 integrations with enterprise API providers, pushing the protocol beyond open-source developer tooling into commercial data marketplaces.
