Google Pulls the Pixel Tablet and Erases the Tablet Category From Its Store

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Google has quietly scrubbed the entire “Tablets” category from its online storefront, removing the Pixel Tablet and formally ending its latest attempt to compete in the large-screen device market. The device was first spotted as out of stock by tracking site Jetstream before disappearing entirely.

Despite the hybrid smart-display angle, the Pixel Tablet failed to disrupt Apple’s long-standing dominance in the tablet sector. Critical reception was generally lukewarm, with average review scores hovering around a mediocre 7 out of 10. While reviewers appreciated the speaker dock concept, many noted that the tablet fell short of the premium software and hardware standards set by Apple’s iPad lineup.

Over the past 13 years, the search giant has repeatedly launched, abandoned, and resurrected various tablet initiatives. Google’s early tablet efforts peaked in 2012 with the launch of the original Nexus 7, a budget-friendly 7-inch tablet manufactured in partnership with Asus. The device was a commercial and critical success, lauded for its low price point and clean Android software.

Unveiled at Google’s I/O developer conference in May 2023, the Pixel Tablet was launched as part of a refreshed hardware push alongside the original Pixel Fold and the mid-range Pixel 7a smartphone. Google sought to differentiate the 11-inch device by bundling it with a magnetic Charging Speaker Dock, attempting to position it as a hybrid between a portable slate and a stationary smart home hub. Powered by Google’s custom Tensor G2 processor and sporting an 11-inch 2560 x 1600 LCD screen, the device carried an $899 launch price.

The quiet phase-out follows a series of internal decisions that curtailed the future of Google’s tablet hardware. In November 2024, reports surfaced that the company had canceled plans for a successor, tentatively dubbed the “Pixel Tablet 2.” Google formally confirmed the development freeze in August 2025, stating that the project was paused while executive leadership re-evaluated the company’s long-term strategy for the tablet category.

While some listings for accessories—such as the official Pixel Tablet Case and the Charging Speaker Dock—remain on the site, they are almost entirely out of stock. The only remaining purchase option is the third-party Wasserstein Pixel Tablet Speaker Stand.

Google attempted to capitalize on early tablet momentum with the larger, Samsung-built Nexus 10 in late 2012 and a refreshed, second-generation Nexus 7 in 2013, which also enjoyed strong sales. However, subsequent attempts struggled to replicate that early magic. The HTC-built Nexus 9 in 2014 was criticized for build quality issues, and the premium, in-house designed Pixel C in 2015 struggled to justify its price due to Android’s persistent lack of tablet-optimized applications.

The quiet end of the Pixel Tablet adds another chapter to Google’s highly inconsistent relationship with larger-screen mobile form factors. In 2018, Google pivoted to ChromeOS for the high-end Pixel Slate, but the device was plagued by severe performance bugs on entry-level models, leading Google to declare in 2019 that it was exiting the tablet market entirely to focus on traditional laptops.

The 2023 Pixel Tablet was meant to be Google’s grand return to the form factor, but its quick demise demonstrates the company’s ongoing struggle to maintain a coherent, multi-device hardware ecosystem. With the category now scrubbed from the store, the Pixel Tablet joins a list of defunct hardware and software initiatives cataloged by the consumer-run “Killed by Google” archive, which tracks discontinued products and services. The device now sits alongside high-profile Google casualties like the Stadia cloud gaming platform, the Jamboard interactive whiteboard, and the Google+ social media network.
