Five-Year Eligibility Battle Puts Porter’s Marquette Future on Hold
Concussion and eligibility rulings reshape Marquette's first public look before UW-Green Bay

Nash Walker arrived at Marquette carrying a shoulder injury that forced summer surgery, and now he has been placed in street clothes after a practice head injury produced a concussion, a source within the program said.
The roster readout released before the Oct. 19 exhibition against UW-Green Bay at the Resch Center shows the guards Nigel James Jr., Adrien Stevens and Damarius Owens; forwards Royce Parham and Sananda Fru.
Colin Porter’s status is more complicated than an injury designation. A Kentucky judge granted a new temporary injunction this week in his fifth-year eligibility case, but Porter did not participate in the team’s intrasquad scrimmage earlier in October after a prior temporary injunction was dissolved, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
The result is a roster in flux heading into the first public appearance of the season. The Golden Eagles played a closed scrimmage against Colorado in Milwaukee on Oct. 10 and will close out exhibitions at Fiserv Forum against Michigan State on Oct. 25.
No television or streaming rights are attached to the Green Bay game, though live statistics will be available, per the article.
NCAA players seeking a fifth year have litigated their way through the conference calendar in recent seasons. The pattern that keeps surfacing is a pause on competition, not a final answer — an outcome that fits Porter’s situation exactly.
Marquette’s schedule, by contrast, moves forward without interruption. A home exhibition carries little financial or competitive weight, but it does set the timing for the team’s first real look at how Porter, if granted, fits into the rotation alongside the three backcourt pieces already named.
Walker’s absence extends an injury-laden stretch for the guard. He redshirted last season, missed most of the summer after shoulder surgery, and then suffered the concussion that put him on the bench for the opener.
The 1934 Packard that anchors Marquette’s championship imagery — the same car from the 1977 title team photograph — drew visitors to a 50th anniversary event in September, when the 1977 squad posed with the vehicle in Milwaukee. That image, preserved and signed, sits at a symbolic distance from the current uncertainty on the court.
The Green Bay exhibition will decide nothing in the standings. What it may clarify is whether Porter suits up, and whether Walker can be cleared.
