Chelsea Restructures Squad with High-Profile Outgoings and Defensive Rebuilding
Andrey Santos and Alejandro Garnacho headline departures as Stamford Bridge prioritizes financial efficiency and tactical refinement.

LONDON — Chelsea Football Club is executing a highly calculated restructuring of its first-team squad this summer, balancing immediate tactical requirements against strict financial considerations. Under the ownership of Clearlake Capital and Todd Boehly, the West London club has established a reputation for aggressive market activity, but the current window reflects a more clinical, value-driven phase of squad management.
At the forefront of this strategy is the high-profile departure of young Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos to domestic rivals Manchester United. The transfer, which represents a substantial return on investment for Chelsea, is valued at an initial £48 million, with an additional £2 million in potential add-ons and a 10 percent sell-on clause.
While the sale of a highly-rated young prospect to a direct Premier League rival has generated intense debate among supporters, Chelsea’s internal stance remains pragmatic. The club operates under a clear framework: “Chelsea do not have a policy that rules out selling a player to any particular club.” Instead, decisions are guided by whether a transaction strengthens the club’s financial position—particularly in light of the Premier League’s stringent Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR)—and how the player fits into the manager’s tactical plans. With players like Moises Caicedo anchoring the midfield, Chelsea officials determined that capitalizing on Santos’s market value outweighed the sporting risk of keeping a peripheral asset.
Garnacho Set for Exit Amid Attacking Reset
In another major squad adjustment, winger Alejandro Garnacho is expected to be the next significant departure from Stamford Bridge. The Athletic reports that the winger “was given permission to miss the start of pre-season training so a transfer can be sorted out.”
Chelsea has established a firm valuation for the player, setting an asking price of €50 million (£43 million) and aiming to finalize his departure within the next two weeks. Garnacho’s desire to leave is driven by a search for regular playing time, as he “wants to leave to get more first-team football.”
This departure aligns with Chelsea’s broader offensive transition. The club’s recruitment department is actively evaluating other attackers, prioritizing a profile that offers immediate utility rather than long-term potential. Specifically, Chelsea “want a ready-made, versatile forward” who can seamlessly integrate across multiple attacking positions.
Meanwhile, the club is utilizing its multi-club network, BlueCo, to facilitate further movement. Sources in France expect Argentine defender Valentin Barco to join Chelsea from sister club Strasbourg, though the West London side has yet to officially confirm the transfer.
The striker department is also undergoing a thorough evaluation. Chelsea’s hierarchy has yet to decide which forward out of Nicolas Jackson, Liam Delap, and Emmanuel Emegha will be sold to streamline the squad. Jackson, however, has been included in the club’s pre-season tour, offering him a direct opportunity to secure his place in the manager’s plans. Ensuring the stability of other core squad members, such as keeping midfielder Enzo Fernandez, remains a key priority as the club seeks to minimize pre-season distractions.
Defensive Rebuilding and Negotiations
While the attacking line is being streamlined, Chelsea’s defensive unit is undergoing a comprehensive overhaul. The club remains in active negotiations with La Liga side Rayo Vallecano to sign left-back Pep Chavarria, though a final transfer fee has not yet been agreed upon.
Additionally, Chelsea intends to sign one or two new central defenders. Crystal Palace’s Maxence Lacroix has emerged as a key target for the Blues. The club also maintains a strong interest in Como’s Jacobo Ramon, a highly regarded Real Madrid academy graduate who fits Chelsea’s profile of young players with significant developmental upside.
These incoming targets are directly linked to planned defensive departures. Italian club Como is currently in advanced negotiations with Chelsea to sign defender Trevoh Chalobah. Chelsea has already rejected two bids from the Serie A side, holding out for a total package of £35 million.
Concurrently, Chelsea officials are working closely with the representatives of both Benoit Badiashile and Axel Disasi to secure transfers to new clubs. This double exit highlights Chelsea’s determination to reshape its backline, moving away from previous signings to establish a more balanced and cohesive defensive unit ahead of the new campaign.
By managing outgoings assertively and targeting specific, high-quality profiles, Chelsea is attempting to transition from a period of rapid player accumulation to one of tactical refinement.
