Spotify Launches AI-Driven Running Mode with Dynamic Tempo Matching for iOS Users

Spotify has expanded its mobile app capabilities with the launch of an AI-powered Running Mode, offering personalized music sequencing matched to real-time workout tempos and structured audio coaching.

The update rolled out Wednesday for Premium subscribers using iOS devices across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Sweden. Housed within the platform’s Fitness Hub, the feature launches with 25 distinct presets tailored to various workout structures.

Users can configure sessions based on specific training styles, such as interval runs, steady runs, or pyramid workouts. The software allows runners to customize training duration, set target beats per minute, and choose preferred music genres. Throughout the session, the app delivers spoken audio cues—currently available exclusively in English—to signal pacing transitions between training phases.

The technical foundation of Running Mode adapts AI capabilities Spotify originally introduced for prompted playlists over the past year. Internal listening trends showed widespread adoption of prompt tools for exercise routines, prompting developers to design a native fitness tool capable of dynamically tailoring tempo to cadence. Matching audio tempo to physical stride rate is widely recognized in sports science as an effective mechanism for regulating running pacing and maintaining endurance performance.

The move to build dedicated exercise features comes shortly after fitness tracking network Strava removed embedded Spotify playback from its native recording interface. By strengthening its standalone fitness offerings, Spotify aims to capture runner engagement directly inside its primary application. The streaming service previously expanded its wellness footprint through a content partnership with interactive exercise hardware manufacturer Peloton.
