Bosnian Police Arrest Suspect Following Arson and Vandalism at Medjugorje Shrine
Police detain a suspect after Apparition Hill statue was defaced and an altar set ablaze days before 50,000 pilgrims arrive.
Bosnian authorities have taken a suspect into custody following an overnight wave of arson and vandalism targeting the Shrine of Our Lady in Medjugorje, one of the Catholic world’s most prominent pilgrimage destinations.
Police responded to the site early July 27 around 4:30 a.m. after worshipers discovered extensive damage to the iconic statue of the Virgin Mary situated on Apparition Hill, locally known as Podbrdo. Vandals used black paint to deface the statue’s face and hands, while writing the phrase “Devil in a skirt” across its stone pedestal.
Investigators confirmed that a separate attack took place near St. James Church, where an outdoor altar was set on fire. Security camera footage captured an unidentified man pouring what appeared to be gasoline onto the altar before igniting it. Firefighters and security personnel managed to extinguish the flames before major structural damage occurred.
Local law enforcement officials have not yet released the suspect’s name or stated a clear motive as forensic teams evaluate whether he acted alone or was linked to additional incidents reported across the complex that night.
The act of desecration comes at a critical time for the shrine, occurring just ahead of Medjugorje’s annual international youth prayer festival. The gathering regularly draws more than 50,000 pilgrims from around the globe to the small town located roughly 85 miles southwest of Sarajevo.
Responding to the incident, the Medjugorje Parish Office issued an official statement appealing for calm, spiritual reflection, and forgiveness rather than retaliation. Church leadership called on the faithful to respond with prayer and fasting, emphasizing that God’s grace should guide the community’s reaction.
“We pray for the conversion of the hearts of those who committed this act,” the parish statement said, asking believers not to return evil for evil, but to demonstrate hope and love during a difficult moment.
Immediate restoration efforts were launched by parish teams and local volunteers to clean the paint from the marble statue and repair the scorched altar. Despite the disruption, church officials emphasized that scheduled daily Masses, confession schedules, and prayer services would proceed without interruption.
Medjugorje gained global prominence in 1981 when six local children reported receiving repeated apparitions and spiritual messages from the Virgin Mary, transforming the quiet village into a major pilgrimage center drawing millions over four decades.
The site held complex diplomatic status within Catholic governance for decades, subject to intense theological debate regarding the authenticity of the private revelations. According to reporting by Vatican News, the Holy See officially approved public devotions and spiritual pilgrimages to Medjugorje, recognizing the positive spiritual fruits of the site while maintaining pastoral care over the thousands who flock there annually.
