Bipartisan Public Backlash Mounts Over Trump Crypto Windfall Ahead of Crucial Senate Vote

Poll shows majority of Americans question presidential ethics as lawmakers debate Clarity Act restrictions

WASHINGTON — A new Reuters/Ipsos poll reveals that 69% of Americans believe President Donald Trump allows his private business interests to dictate policy decisions, escalating scrutiny over presidential conflicts of interest just as senators prepare for a high-stakes September vote on the Clarity Act.

That skepticism cuts across party lines. Roughly half of surveyed Republicans say personal commercial ventures influence his official actions, while 63% of all respondents characterize the Trump family’s cryptocurrency windfalls as inappropriate — a view shared by independent voters and Democrats alike. The survey of 1,166 U.S. adults, conducted Aug. 14–17, carries a 3-point margin of error.

Yet Republican voters remain divided on the transactions themselves. Approximately seven in 10 defend the family’s right to pursue digital asset profits, even as they question the policy influence.

The legislation taking shape on Capitol Hill would legally prohibit a sitting commander-in-chief from operating or capitalizing on commercial token projects. Democratic lawmakers cite official financial disclosures showing Trump amassed upwards of $1.4 billion from digital asset operations, including World Liberty Financial and a self-branded meme coin.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand has pressed for formal oversight hearings while introducing measures to bar elected federal officials from issuing proprietary tokens. The White House strongly disputes the ethics allegations. Spokeswoman Anna Kelly said no conflicts of interest exist, that the president governs strictly in the public interest, and that his asset portfolio is managed independently without his day-to-day involvement.
