Rob Gronkowski Partners With eBay Live as Sports Trading Card Market Hits New Highs

Four-time Super Bowl champion Rob Gronkowski is expanding his post-football portfolio into the booming trading card industry through a partnership with eBay Live to launch a new series titled “Gronk Geeks Out.” The project precedes his appearance on Aug. 1 at The National Sports Collectors Convention, where the former tight end will dive into the mechanics of contemporary sports collecting.

Gronkowski’s venture arrives during a major evolution for the sports collectibles market. Once driven primarily by physical hobby shops and localized trades, trading cards underwent a massive commercial expansion during the early 2020s, transforming into a high-volume alternative asset class powered by digital breaks, professional grading standards, and live-streamed auctions.

Reflecting on his personal history with the hobby, Gronkowski recalled collecting baseball and NHL cards during his youth before market interest briefly contracted. He noted that the industry has since rebounded to an unprecedented high, with renewed enthusiasm drawing in both long-time hobbyists and active professional athletes.

The secondary market value of modern football cards was brought to Gronkowski’s attention by a long-time friend who spent ten years purchasing the tight end’s cards on eBay throughout his active playing career. That friend accumulated roughly 100 individual playing cards, which have appreciated substantially in market value since their original acquisition.

Despite his own status as one of the most decorated tight ends in NFL history, Gronkowski identified NBA Hall of Famer Michael Jordan as his ultimate target in modern card openings. He emphasized that pulling a rare, serial-numbered Jordan card—specifically a 1-of-1 or a top-tier 1-of-10 insert—remains the pinnacle chase for collectors across the hobby.
