Microsoft Intervenes to Stop LG Auto-Installing McAfee Adware on Gaming Monitors

Following mounting complaints from PC gamers, Microsoft has intervened to halt LG Electronics from distributing McAfee software promotional pop-ups through auto-installing monitor utility software.

Pavan Davuluri, Microsoft’s executive vice president of Windows and Devices, confirmed that the company engaged with LG after users discovered that connecting select LG gaming displays automatically triggered the installation of the “LG Monitor App Installer” on Windows systems. Once installed, the utility began serving promotional advertisements for McAfee security products. Davuluri stated that LG subsequently agreed to strip the McAfee pop-ups from the application to maintain user experience standards across the Windows ecosystem.

The mechanism behind the automatic installation stems from a feature within Microsoft’s Universal Windows Platform (UWP), which permits approved hardware companion applications to automatically download and run when specific peripheral device IDs are detected. While designed to seamlessly provide control panels and drivers for peripherals—a practice also utilized by major accessory brands including Razer, Logitech, Asus, and Gigabyte—Microsoft’s own technical documentation acknowledges that silent companion app deployments often lead to user confusion due to the absence of explicit installation prompts.

Pre-installed promotional software, historically categorized as bloatware or adware, has long been a revenue stream for hardware manufacturers seeking to supplement profit margins on consumer electronics. Hardware vendors frequently strike financial partnerships with software providers to bundle trials or ad placements onto fresh Windows installations or connected peripherals. However, modern users often perceive these bundled promotions as intrusive, particularly when utility apps prove difficult to remove without disabling system services or resorting to third-party uninstallation software.

The background installation issue affected a wide array of LG gaming displays. User reports identified multiple display models triggering the installer, including the 34GX900A-B, 45GX950-B.AEU, 32GS95UE-B, 39GX950B, 27GP83B-B, 27GN800, and 27GN850-B.

McAfee, originally established during the early MS-DOS era as a pioneer in anti-malware utilities like VirusScan, has seen its consumer reputation shift over decades. While maintaining a significant footprint in commercial enterprise security, its aggressive marketing partnerships and persistent pop-up notifications have turned its consumer-facing software into a frequent target of user dissatisfaction when packaged alongside retail hardware.
