Italian Police Seize $290 Million Cocaine Shipment Hidden in Ecuador Banana Cargo
The €250 million haul from Ecuador marks one of the largest drug busts at the northern Italian port in recent years.
Italian border police have intercepted nearly 1,700 pounds of high-purity cocaine hidden inside a refrigerated banana shipment at the northern port of Vado Ligure.
The massive haul, estimated to be worth approximately €250 million ($290 million) on the street, represents one of the largest drug seizures at the Ligurian port in recent years. Officers from the Guardia di Finanza discovered 650 packages of the drug concealed within the pallets of fruit. The container had recently arrived from Ecuador, a country that has increasingly become a major maritime transit hub for South American cocaine bound for European markets.
European law enforcement agencies, including Europol, have repeatedly warned about the exploitation of legitimate agricultural trade routes. Bananas are a preferred cover for drug cartels because the perishable nature of the fruit demands fast-tracked customs clearance, reducing the time authorities have to inspect shipments. This rapid transit is critical for maintaining both the quality of the produce and the secrecy of the illicit cargo.
The Guardia di Finanza stated that the seizure was the result of a detailed risk analysis focusing on commercial shipping routes connecting South American ports to Vado Ligure. The northern Italian port has become an increasingly attractive target for international trafficking syndicates seeking to bypass more heavily monitored southern gateways, such as Gioia Tauro in Calabria.
The Italian bust mirrors similar high-volume smuggling operations intercepted globally. Recently, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Pharr Port of Entry in Texas seized over 1,100 pounds of cocaine, valued at $10.8 million, which had been concealed inside a commercial shipment of cabbages. In that case, non-intrusive imaging and canine units were required to locate the hidden narcotics.
Italian authorities confirmed that field tests verified the exceptional purity of the seized cocaine. Investigations are ongoing to trace the local distribution networks intended to receive the shipment once it cleared the port.
