Control Resonant Quadruples Original’s Steam Peak as Remedy Escapes Epic Exclusivity Trap
The sequel's day-one availability on Valve's storefront bypasses the Epic Games Store exclusivity that delayed Alan Wake 2's profitability by over a year.

Remedy Entertainment’s return to Steam after a six-year absence has delivered immediate commercial traction. Control Resonant, the sequel to the studio’s 2019 supernatural shooter, hit approximately 42,799 concurrent players on Valve’s storefront within days of its September 24 launch. That figure represents more than four times the 9,193-player peak recorded by Control Ultimate Edition.
The launch placed the game at number one on Steam’s global top sellers chart. As of early October, it holds the tenth position behind Dressmaker and carries a “Very Positive” rating approaching 4,000 user reviews. Critical reception has focused heavily on the sequel’s narrative structure, environmental art direction, and combat pacing.
This debut stands in stark contrast to the distribution strategy that defined Alan Wake 2. Released in late 2023, the survival horror title was locked behind an Epic Games Store exclusivity agreement for PC. While Alan Wake 2 became Remedy’s fastest-selling release and crossed three million units earlier this year, the lack of Steam access severely limited its initial audience reach. The game required over a year to recoup its development and marketing costs despite widespread critical acclaim. By bringing Control Resonant directly to Steam on day one, Remedy bypassed the friction that slowed its previous major release.
Console performance mirrors the PC momentum. The title currently ranks inside the top 10 best-selling PlayStation 5 games across 20 distinct regional markets. Maintaining that positioning requires competing against a dense release calendar. Onimusha: Way of the Sword, The Blood of Dawnwalker, and Wolverine all launched during the same window.
The competitive pressure will intensify sharply before the end of the year. The Witcher 3 Remastered, Ace Combat 8, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, and Gears of War: E-Day are scheduled to arrive in the coming weeks, preceding the industry-wide event of Grand Theft Auto VI. Holding player retention through that gauntlet will test whether Control Resonant’s strong opening translates into sustained revenue.
Audience sentiment suggests strong brand loyalty. Following reports that the game had been cracked shortly after release, discussions on Reddit revealed a notable contingent of piracy-adjacent users stating their intention to purchase legitimate copies specifically to fund Remedy’s future operations. Such voluntary conversions remain rare in modern PC gaming and indicate high consumer goodwill toward the Finnish developer.
Looking beyond the current release cycle, Remedy’s production pipeline centers on a combined remake of Max Payne and Max Payne 2. Announced in 2022 under a funding agreement with Rockstar Games parent company Take-Two Interactive, the project merges both classic third-person shooters into a single modern release built on Remedy’s proprietary Northlight engine. No release window exists yet, and development timelines suggest it remains years from completion. Parallel efforts to adapt the Control and Alan Wake universes for television and film were announced in 2024, though neither project has moved past early development stages publicly.
