Arteta’s brutal roster move hands Barcelona a Premier League champion for £8.6 million

The Catalan club finalized the acquisition of Brazilian international forward Gabriel Jesus for a modest £8.6 million ($11.2 million) on transfer deadline day. The deal came together rapidly after the 29-year-old was abruptly separated from Arsenal’s first-team training squad, clearing the way for Barcelona to execute a low-risk, high-reward transfer.

“The truth is I was training, I did all the pre-season training with Arsenal normal and then obviously I knew already that probably I will not play there or get some opportunity,” Jesus said in an interview with SportyTV. “But no-one told me nothing. I’m a professional you know and then obviously I was training with the group and then from nothing they put me to train away from the group.”

The swiftness of the move capped a sudden shift in Jesus’s status in North London. Despite participating fully in Arsenal’s pre-season preparations and appearing in all four of the club’s official warm-up fixtures, Jesus was unexpectedly instructed to train away from the main group as the Premier League season neared its kickoff.

This decisive action by Arteta mirrors previous high-profile squad shakeups during his managerial tenure. Since taking charge of Arsenal, the Spanish manager has consistently demonstrated a willingness to marginalize established stars to reshape squad chemistry and tactical dynamics, notably overseeing the quick departures of players like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Mesut Özil, and goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale once they were deemed surplus to requirements.

The forward added: “I was training and doing my maximum to be ready if I have the chance to play in a high level again and then obviously in the last week it was very quick.”

The £8.6 million transfer fee represents a steep decline from the £45 million ($58 million) Arsenal paid to sign the forward from Manchester City in July 2022. During his time in North London, Jesus made 123 appearances, scoring 32 goals and providing 22 assists. While his high-pressing style and link-up play initially transformed Arsenal’s attack, his tenure was heavily disrupted by injuries.

Spotting an opportunity to secure an experienced international forward, Barcelona’s hierarchy moved swiftly. Sporting director Deco and club president Joan Laporta led the negotiations, wrapping up the agreement within a single 24-hour window. “The work with Deco, and the president of the club, and my agent was amazing,” Jesus said. “In one day, it was sure that I would have the opportunity to come. I said yes, straight away, no matter what and I am so happy to be here.”

After being distanced from the squad, Jesus was left out of Arsenal’s matchday squads for their opening two domestic fixtures while his representatives finalized an exit. His championship pedigree was established early in his career at Manchester City, where he won four Premier League titles, three League Cups, and an FA Cup under Pep Guardiola before moving to London.

A severe cruciate ligament tear ruled him out for a substantial portion of 2025, though he eventually returned to help Arsenal secure a Premier League title. Despite the clinical nature of Jesus’s departure, Arteta publicly praised the forward’s impact on Arsenal’s upward trajectory over the past few seasons. “He was a massive contributor for us to change the dynamic and the energy in and around this club,” Arteta said. “I think when Gabi came in he brought this energy, this belief within, this aura, that’s really helped achieve what happened next. And now, yeah, he has an amazing opportunity to enjoy one of the biggest clubs in the world, and a beautiful place to live as well, and we are happy for him.”

Jesus has already made his first competitive appearance for Barcelona, coming off the bench for the final ten minutes of Sunday’s 5-0 LaLiga victory over Valencia. For Barcelona, navigating ongoing financial fair play restrictions has made highly discounted deals for proven veterans a priority, and Jesus’s arrival provides manager Hansi Flick with experienced depth across the frontline at minimal financial risk.
