Apple Rolls Out $50 Monthly Family Plan Covering Up to Six Members’ Devices

New Multi-User Insurance Tier Covers Up to Six Household Members at $50 Monthly

Apple has introduced a new multi-user insurance tier, the AppleCare One Family plan, designed to cover entire households under a single subscription. The flat rate of $50 per month in the United States provides protection for up to six family members, a departure from the company’s historical focus on individual device or single-user account plans.

The plan was unveiled alongside Apple’s latest hardware lineup, which includes the iPhone Duo and the iPhone 18. Under the AppleCare One Family terms, eligible hardware must be less than four years old, and existing equipment meeting that age threshold can be registered. Newly purchased products tied to any covered member’s Apple ID are automatically added upon activation.

To prevent claim saturation across large multi-device households, Apple has capped total theft and loss claims under the AppleCare One Family plan to six per year across all covered members. If six individuals share the plan, this equates to an average of one theft or loss claim per person annually.

By comparison, Apple’s standalone single-device AppleCare+ plan allows up to two theft and loss claims per individual device. The individual tier of AppleCare One—which costs less but restricts coverage to a maximum of three devices registered exclusively under a single subscriber’s Apple ID—permits up to three theft and loss claims per year.

The consolidation of insurance coverage into a single family tier reflects a longer-term evolution of Apple’s customer support offerings. Apple first launched the AppleCare Protection Plan in 1999 to extend the standard coverage that comes with new purchases. Every new Apple device natively includes a standard one-year limited hardware warranty and 90 days of complimentary phone support, which covers manufacturing defects but excludes accidental drops, liquid damage, or loss.

In October 2011, alongside the release of the iPhone 4S, the company introduced AppleCare+, which incorporated accidental damage coverage subject to per-incident service fees. In September 2018, Apple expanded the service further by adding dedicated Theft and Loss protection tiers for iPhone users.

Signing up for the AppleCare One Family plan requires an active Family Sharing group. The administrative organizer must configure the group within the iOS or iPadOS system settings prior to initiating the insurance plan. To set up the feature, users navigate to **Settings** on an Apple device, tap their **Apple ID** profile, and select **Family**. From there, the organizer can invite up to five additional members using their respective Apple IDs.

The $50 monthly subscription includes the standard suite of benefits provided under standard AppleCare+ tiers: hardware repairs covering accidental damage including cracked screens and damaged back glass, zero-cost battery replacements for covered devices, and loss and theft protection capped at a plan-wide limit.

Subsequent updates in 2019 transitioned AppleCare+ from fixed two-year or three-year upfront coverage packages toward flexible monthly auto-renewing subscriptions, setting the technical foundation for umbrella service plans like AppleCare One. The new structure also builds upon Apple’s broader effort to consolidate subscription services around household accounts.

In September 2014, Apple introduced Family Sharing with iOS 8, enabling up to six individuals to share App Store purchases, storage plans, and digital media. That architecture was later leveraged in October 2020 for Apple One, a subscription bundle uniting Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, iCloud+, and other digital services under unified individual and family pricing tiers.

Once the family group is established, the subscription can be managed directly through the hardware settings by navigating to **General**, selecting **AppleCare & Warranty**, and completing the AppleCare One Family subscription process. Once active, hardware associated with any confirmed family member’s Apple ID automatically populates within the management panel, provided the hardware meets the four-year eligibility requirement.

The introduction of the multi-user plan marks a structural shift in how the tech giant structures its extended warranty products. Historically, Apple’s protection programs were sold primarily on an individual device basis or tied strictly to a single user account. The new family tier aggregates hardware protection across an entire household, allowing eligible devices owned by up to six individuals to be covered under one monthly bill.

| Coverage Tier | Monthly Cost | Device Limit | Account Restrictions | Annual Theft/Loss Claims |
