LONDON — Tottenham Hotspur mounted a late rally at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but Aston Villa held on for a 3-2 victory in Round 5 of the Premier League season. The result extended head coach Roberto De Zerbi’s difficult start in North London.
Tottenham dominated the opening sequence of play, yet Aston Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki made multiple first-half saves to keep the hosts from scoring. Villa then used one of their limited opportunities to take the lead when Johan Manzambi prodded the ball into the net in the fourth minute of first-half stoppage time, 45+4′.
The visitors’ advantage remained intact after the restart, although Tottenham believed they had equalized through attacker Mohammed Kudus. The goal was disallowed after an offside ruling against teammate Andy Robertson in the buildup was upheld.
Referee Samuel Barrott officiated the fixture, which featured significant second-half involvement from the match officials. After Kudus’s disallowed strike, Aston Villa created further danger with fast transition play.
Nicolas Jackson completed a quick attack in the 67th minute to double the visitors’ lead, making it 2-0. Emiliano Buendía then scored in the 79th minute, stretching Villa’s margin to 3-0 with the match entering its final ten minutes.
Tottenham’s response arrived late. Midfielder Conor Gallagher scored in the 86th minute to register Tottenham’s first league goal of the campaign, and defender Jan Paul van Hecke added a second goal for the home side in deep stoppage time.
Time expired before Tottenham could complete the comeback. Aston Villa secured three points on the road and remained positioned in the upper portion of the Premier League standings, while De Zerbi’s side continued searching for momentum five matches into the domestic season.
