Rodri Chooses Barcelona Over Real Madrid in Ballon d’Or Transfer Battle

Barcelona wins the race for Rodri after rival pursuit from Real Madrid

BARCELONA, Spain — Spanish midfielder Rodrigo “Rodri” Hernández has chosen Barcelona over bitter rivals Real Madrid, joining the Catalan club from Manchester City, according to details reported by Spanish sports daily *Mundo Deportivo*. The reigning Ballon d’Or winner will return to La Liga after five seasons in England’s Premier League.

The 28-year-old midfielder said he evaluated both options extensively after a summer break. His decision, according to statements cited in the report, was based entirely on the sporting project, the clarity of the footballing vision presented by Barcelona coach Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco, and his belief that Barcelona offered the most compelling environment for his continued tactical development.

Rodri’s return to Spain follows an intense head-to-head pursuit between the country’s two traditional powerhouses. He acknowledged the scale of Real Madrid’s approach and praised the Madrid hierarchy for its conduct, personally contacting senior figures involved in the club’s recruitment effort to thank them for their interest before publicly finalizing his choice.

“Well, I don’t think it’s appropriate to reveal a private conversation, but he evidently expressed his desire for me to go and what I could contribute to the team,” Rodri said regarding discussions surrounding the Madrid offer. “The treatment was very good. When I made the decision, I also called him to thank him for the interest and the treatment. I think he is a great coach, he has already shown it wherever he has been in his great stages, and Real Madrid is going to be a tough rival for this league.”

The move is a landmark triumph for Barcelona’s leadership structure. Deco assumed direction of the club’s football operations in August 2023, while Flick took charge of the team in May 2024 following the departure of Xavi Hernández. Their tactical vision persuaded Rodri to choose Barcelona over Real Madrid’s competing offer.

Rodri was born in Madrid and developed through Atlético Madrid’s youth ranks before making his senior professional breakthrough at Villarreal between 2015 and 2018. He returned to Atlético Madrid for the 2018–19 season and established himself as one of La Liga’s top defensive midfielders.

His departure from English football was framed as a pursuit of a new sporting ambition rather than an exit driven by dissatisfaction at Manchester City. Rodri noted that football in the Premier League is largely contained to what happens on the pitch, while returning to Spain brings a heightened media environment and traditional rivalries that he feels prepared to embrace.

Manchester City activated Rodri’s €70 million (£62.8 million) release clause in July 2019, bringing him to the Premier League under manager Pep Guardiola. During the next five years in Manchester, he anchored City’s midfield while the club won four consecutive Premier League titles from 2021 to 2024, the FA Cup, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.

The defining season of Rodri’s Manchester City tenure was 2022–23. He scored the winning goal in a 1–0 victory over Inter Milan in Istanbul, securing Manchester City’s first UEFA Champions League title and completing a European treble.

Rodri was named Player of the Tournament at UEFA Euro 2024 after helping Spain win the continental title in Germany. His club and international performances culminated in October 2024, when he received the Ballon d’Or as the world’s top male footballer, becoming the first defensive midfielder to receive the honor since Lothar Matthäus in 1990.

At Barcelona, Rodri is expected to anchor the midfield and provide central stability and positional discipline to Flick’s tactical system alongside young Spanish international talents Pedri and Gavi.
