Manchester United Set Sights on £50m Juventus Defender in £500m Backline Overhaul

Manchester United’s newly established sporting department, led by the INEOS group, is planning a multi-window restructuring of its defensive line that could ultimately total £500 million (approx. $630 million). The club is prioritizing adaptable, mobile defenders capable of fitting the tactical systems favored by sporting director Dan Ashworth and technical director Jason Wilcox, including the fluid back-three formations used by head coach Ruben Amorim.

The most immediate target is Juventus defender Pierre Kalulu. Manchester United has emerged as the frontrunner for the versatile Frenchman after sending scouts to Italy on multiple occasions to assess the 24-year-old. Kalulu, a former France under-21 international, has played comfortably as both a center-back and a right-back.


Kalulu is currently on loan at Juventus from AC Milan, creating a complicated negotiation. Juventus secured him in August 2024 on a season-long loan worth €3.3 million, with a €14 million purchase option and €3 million in potential add-ons. His immediate impact in Turin has made Juventus officials highly reluctant to let him leave, and the Italian club is reportedly considering activating the purchase option early before offering him a contract through June 30, 2029.

The pursuit comes as United continues to deal with persistent depth and injury problems in defense. Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia have suffered physical setbacks, even after the club signed Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, and Noussair Mazraoui during the summer 2024 transfer window.

Juventus has set an internal valuation of €45 million to €50 million (£39 million to £43 million) to discourage increasing Premier League interest. Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, and Aston Villa are among the other domestic clubs linked with the defender, but Manchester United remains the most serious suitor.

United is also searching for a dynamic left-back to succeed Shaw. The club missed out on England international Lewis Hall, who completed a permanent move to Newcastle United, and has identified Stade Rennais defender Adrien Truffert as one of its primary targets. Truffert’s attacking profile in Ligue 1 has made him a highly sought-after prospect.

Alongside its senior defensive recruitment, Manchester United is tracking younger players for future development. Nuremberg’s highly rated 18-year-old center-back Finn Jeltsch is among the emerging talents being monitored, although a move for him is viewed as a long-term project. Kalulu, by contrast, is being pursued as an immediate reinforcement for the senior squad ahead of the upcoming transfer windows.
