Brighton Crush Coventry 5-0 as Lampard’s Side Remain Pointless

COVENTRY, England — Coventry City opened with high pressure at the Coventry Building Society Arena, where Ephron Mason-Clarke repeatedly threatened down the flanks and Jack Rudoni headed over the crossbar from close range.

Brighton & Hove Albion eventually surged into the Premier League’s top four with a 5-0 victory, although Diego Gomez had earlier missed a chance to put the visitors ahead. In the sixth minute, Coventry defender Jay Dasilva miscued a clearance and gave Gomez an open look from 12 yards, but the Brighton forward dragged his shot wide of the post.

Rudoni came close again shortly before the 30-minute mark, meeting the ball with a powerful volley at the back post. Brighton’s Dutch international goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen produced a sharp save, and three minutes later he tipped Frank Onyeka’s well-struck volley over the bar.

Coventry’s pressure did not produce a goal. Instead, Brighton struck against the run of play in the 35th minute when Charalampos Kostoulas reacted quickest to a bouncing loose ball in the penalty area, moved past his defender and placed a clinical finish beyond Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth.

The result left Frank Lampard’s newly promoted side anchored to the bottom of the table without a single point or goal this season. Coventry had already lost to Arsenal, Manchester City and Hull City after Lampard took charge of the Sky Blues for their first top-flight campaign since the club’s relegation in 2001.

Brighton extended the advantage in the 51st minute. Malick Yalcouyé drove forward through midfield and calmly placed his shot past Rushworth to make it 2-0, before summer signing Taiwo Awoniyi was shown a straight red card moments later.

The Nigerian forward was dismissed after a physical altercation in which he caught Brighton defender Maxime De Cuyper with an elbow. Coventry’s chances of a comeback were effectively extinguished, while Brighton gained a one-man advantage and dominated possession.

In the 70th minute, Bobby Thomas fouled Kostoulas inside the area and the referee awarded Brighton a penalty. Veteran German midfielder Pascal Groß converted the spot-kick to make it 3-0.

Brighton captain Lewis Dunk added a fourth in the 83rd minute with a spectacular 25-yard strike into the top corner. Coventry’s difficult start continued, with Lampard facing an uphill battle to stabilize a side struggling with defensive discipline and offensive production.

Yasin Ayari completed the scoring deep into stoppage time, curling a shot past Rushworth in the 94th minute to secure the 5-0 victory and lift Brighton into fourth place in the Premier League table.
