Manchester United Weighs Harry Kane Move as Carrick’s Striker Plan Falters

MANCHESTER, England — Manchester United’s search for a definitive attacking identity under manager Michael Carrick has revived questions about the club’s long-term striker strategy. The pressure to secure a proven goalscorer remains high as Carrick experiments with fluid frontlines to compensate for inconsistent production from his traditional strikers.

United have invested heavily in young center-forwards during recent transfer windows, yet Carrick has often bypassed his natural striker options. Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo have recently been used in “false nine” roles, reducing regular starts for Slovenian international Benjamin Sesko, who joined from RB Leipzig, and Dutch forward Joshua Zirkzee.

Zirkzee has struggled to adapt to the physical demands of the Premier League since arriving from Serie A side Bologna two years ago. The tactical dilemma has led former Manchester United forward Dion Dublin to urge the Old Trafford hierarchy to pursue Bayern Munich talisman Harry Kane.

Speaking to media outlet TEAMtalk, Dublin said Sesko has significant potential but currently lacks the clinical edge needed to consistently deliver a 30-goal season at the highest level. He argued that a world-class focal point such as Kane is essential if Manchester United are to return to the summit of domestic and European football.

Dublin was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson in 1992 and later won the Premier League Golden Boot with Coventry City. He said Kane’s age should not deter United’s recruitment team. Although the England captain is 33, Kane’s game has never relied on raw pace; his elite positioning, physical strength, aerial ability and deep familiarity with the tactical landscape of the Premier League could make him a low-risk, high-reward option for several more seasons.

United have previously used short-term, world-class striking reinforcements to bridge developmental gaps. Zlatan Ibrahimović scored 28 goals in his debut season at age 34 after joining in 2016, while Edinson Cavani supplied 17 crucial goals during a transitional campaign after arriving in 2020.

Kane’s contractual position could match United’s need for immediate leadership on the pitch. He is in the final 12 months of the four-year contract he signed with Bayern Munich after his €100 million (£86.4 million) transfer from Tottenham Hotspur in August 2023. Industry database Transfermarkt currently values him at approximately £51 million.

That contract has created a dilemma for the German champions. If Bayern fail to agree an extension with the forward, they risk losing him on a free transfer in the summer and could be forced to consider transfer bids during the upcoming January window. Whether United’s leadership follows Dublin’s recommendation and tests Bayern’s resolve in January remains to be seen.

Since moving to the Bundesliga, Kane has remained one of the most prolific goalscorers in world football. He helped Bayern Munich win two Bundesliga titles and multiple domestic cup triumphs while serving as the focal point of the Bavarian club’s attack. Last season, he recorded 61 goals and seven assists in 51 appearances across all competitions.

Before moving to Germany, Kane established himself as one of the greatest goalscorers in Premier League history by scoring 213 goals for Tottenham Hotspur, leaving him second only to Alan Shearer on the league’s all-time scoring list. He is also England’s all-time record goalscorer after surpassing Wayne Rooney’s international tally. Kane has carried his momentum into the current campaign, recording four goal contributions in his first five competitive matches.
