Arsenal and Manchester City Target PSG Defender Willian Pacho

LONDON — Arsenal and Manchester City have reportedly registered interest in Paris Saint-Germain center-back Willian Pacho, setting up a potential Premier League transfer battle for 2027. The 24-year-old Ecuadorian international is under contract with the Ligue 1 champions until June 2031.

Pacho’s value is estimated at approximately £69 million ($90 million), although PSG are expected to demand a premium because of his long-term deal and central role in Paris. The French powerhouse remains under no financial pressure to sell, making any move for one of its prized assets an uphill task.

The defender began his professional journey at Independiente del Valle in Ecuador. The club, renowned for its youth academy, won the Copa Sudamericana in 2019 with Pacho’s help before he moved to Belgian side Royal Antwerp in early 2022. There, he won a domestic double.

A brief but successful spell at Eintracht Frankfurt during the 2023–24 season preceded Pacho’s multi-million-dollar transfer to the French capital. Since joining PSG, he has enjoyed a meteoric rise under manager Luis Enrique.

Operating alongside veteran Brazilian defender Marquinhos, Pacho became a cornerstone of the PSG squad that secured back-to-back UEFA Champions League titles. Standing over six feet tall, he combines physical power with exceptional recovery speed and sophisticated ball-distribution skills.

Those qualities have made Pacho highly sought after by managers who use possession-based, high-line systems. Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has consistently prioritized versatile, technically proficient defenders, including Josko Gvardiol, Rúben Dias, and Nathan Aké, to support his build-up play from the back.

A move to Manchester City would strengthen the club’s defensive rotation while also denying a direct rival a world-class talent. Arsenal, meanwhile, are considering the Ecuadorian as they seek to maintain their domestic and continental supremacy under Mikel Arteta.

The Gunners have enjoyed a perfect start to their current campaign across all competitions. Arsenal claimed the Premier League title and finished as runners-up in the 2025/26 Champions League, while Arteta’s board is focused on sustaining that success by recruiting players accustomed to winning cultures.

Pacho would nevertheless create a tactical and financial puzzle for the north London club. Arsenal already have one of world football’s most stable defensive pairings in William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães, and recently added England international Ezri Konsa to their central defensive depth.

With significant capital already tied up in their backline, some club observers believe Arsenal’s transfer priority in 2027 might shift toward offensive reinforcements rather than another marquee defender. PSG’s contract position could also complicate negotiations, with several years remaining before June 2031 and an astronomical fee expected for any successful bid.
