Konsa-Gabriel Defense Keeps Arsenal Intact Without Saliba
Six clean sheets in nine matches have erased concerns about Arsenal's back line following William Saliba's injury.

Ezri Konsa’s summer move to Arsenal was supposed to be a stopgap. Instead, his partnership with Gabriel Magalhaes has produced six clean sheets in nine matches across all competitions while William Saliba recovers from an injury that sidelined him for the opening months of the season.
The numbers surfaced after Sunday’s 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest, secured by a late Noni Madueke goal. But the result hinged entirely on what happened without the ball. Konsa and Gabriel absorbed relentless aerial pressure throughout the second half, prompting opposing manager Oliver Glasner to call them “possibly the best centre-back pairing in the world at the moment.”

Mikel Arteta quantified the workload. He told reporters his staff predicted roughly 50 balls would be launched into the penalty area, a direct physical strategy designed to exploit the absence of Saliba. “The win was not possible without them, because they have so much quality and physicality,” Arteta said.
Forest pushed Chris Wood and Callum Hudson-Odoi forward late, forcing isolated one-on-one duels. Both center-backs held their ground.
When Arsenal signed Konsa from Aston Villa, the immediate concern was distribution. Saliba averages significantly more progressive passes per 90 minutes than any alternative on the roster. That gap remains visible when Arsenal try to build out from the back under heavy pressing structures. Defensively, however, the transition has been seamless.
Cristhian Mosquera’s recent injury issues left zero margin for error at the position. Had Konsa required an adjustment period, Arteta would have been forced to play a compromised back line during the congested autumn fixture list. The Premier League schedule does not wait for center-backs to find their footing.

Four shutouts in seven league matches and two more in Champions League group play point to a structural shift rather than temporary luck. Arsenal conceded 29 goals in 38 Premier League fixtures last season. They are currently tracking well below that pace.
Saliba is expected back before the winter window. His return will create a selection problem Arteta did not anticipate having three months ago.
