Kwan’s Wall Catch Can’t Save Guardians From ALCS Game 5 Loss
Tampa Bay took a 3-2 ALCS lead behind Drew Rasmussen despite Kwan's spectacular defensive play

The Cleveland Guardians trail the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2 in the American League Championship Series after a 3-1 defeat in Game 5, despite centerfielder Steven Kwan robbing Victor Mesa Jr. of a potential home run.
Tampa Bay starter Drew Rasmussen controlled the game on the mound, limiting Cleveland to a single run and handing the Rays a series lead that now requires the Guardians to win twice at Tropicana Field to reach the World Series.
Mesa launched a drive deep into right-center field during the contest. The ball tracked toward the top of the wall, appearing destined to strike the yellow home run line. Kwan elevated with precise timing to pull it back, denying Tampa Bay what would have stretched their advantage to three runs or more.
The catch briefly shifted momentum heading into the bottom of the ninth inning. Leadoff hitter Chase DeLauter drew a walk against Rays closer Bryan Baker, but Baker retired the next three batters to seal the victory.
Cleveland has dropped consecutive games at home. Postseason baseball now moves to Florida, where road teams historically face steeper odds closing out a deficit. The Guardians last played in the World Series in 2016, when they blew a 3-1 lead against the Chicago Cubs.
Game 6 is scheduled for Monday night at Tropicana Field. Tanner Bibee will start for Cleveland, attempting to force a decisive Game 7. Freddy Peralta takes the mound for Tampa Bay with a chance to clinch the pennant.
