Bitcoin Pauses Near $83,300 as Treasury Yields Cap Momentum

Multi-decade high bond yields and dollar strength counter fading Fed rate hike odds.

A sharp run-up in long-dated government bond yields is keeping a tight lid on digital assets, stalling Bitcoin below major resistance despite growing market confidence that the Federal Reserve will avoid further policy tightening this month.

Bitcoin changed hands around $83,327 on Monday, eking out a 0.6% daily advance while nursing a roughly 3% deficit over the past seven days. The leading cryptocurrency has remained locked in a multi-week consolidation band between $80,300 and $87,100, struggling to break out as high risk-free returns on sovereign debt lure capital away from speculative markets.

Yields on benchmark U.S. government paper remain near multi-decade peaks, with the 10-year Treasury yield trading at 5.24% and the 30-year bond yielding 5.60%. Both instruments reached fresh 52-week apexes of 5.37% and 5.73% last week, marking borrowing costs unseen in more than twenty years. Historically, elevated real yields exert downward pressure on zero-yielding assets by raising the opportunity cost of holding risk instruments.

Renewed energy market spikes have refueled headline inflation concerns, bolstering the U.S. dollar and leaving financial conditions relatively restrictive. Although Bitcoin has frequently been pitched as a hedge against inflation or geopolitical uncertainty, its price behavior continues to mirror that of broader tech equities and high-beta assets, reacting negatively whenever the dollar strengthens and yields climb.

The bond sell-off persists even as money markets aggressively price out rate increases by the Federal Reserve. Futures monitored by the CME FedWatch tool show the implied probability of a 25-basis-point interest-rate increase at the central bank’s October 28 meeting dropped to 19.4%, down from 22.1% last week and over 42% a month prior. Decentralized prediction markets Polymarket and Myriad align with that trajectory, each estimating hike odds at 17%.

Institutional participation through spot exchange-traded funds has reflected this macroeconomic indecision. Following consecutive sessions of severe redemptions—including $487.07 million pulled on Wednesday and $244.13 million on Thursday—U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs managed a modest rebound, taking in $21.13 million on Friday, according to SoSoValue tracking. Overall momentum across digital asset products has tapered markedly after securing $11.1 billion in aggregate inflows since mid-July.

Market observers note that the drivers behind Treasury movements will shape Bitcoin’s trajectory. Should elevated yields reflect unsustainable U.S. sovereign debt burdens rather than robust economic growth, structural arguments for non-sovereign digital collateral could gain traction over the medium term.

For now, chart levels delineate immediate risk. Technical analysts point to $85,600 as the decisive hurdle required to retest $87,395, while failure to defend the $82,000 threshold exposes Bitcoin to a retest of support near $79,000. All eyes now shift to incoming U.S. inflation data to gauge whether bond yields will retreat enough to provide liquidity relief.
