Mourinho’s Trap Springs on Inter: Two Errors, Two Goals, Three Points

Real Madrid defeated Inter Milan 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabéu in the opening match of the 2026-27 UEFA Champions League group phase. The result marked José Mourinho’s first victory since returning as Real Madrid head coach, against the team he led to the 2010 Champions League title at the same stadium.

Inter Milan’s goalkeeper Josep Martínez faced an early test when Marcus Thuram forced Thibaut Courtois into a save from close range. Lautaro Martínez then tried a shot from the edge of the box that Courtois parried away. Inter controlled possession during the opening minutes.

The breakthrough came from a defensive lapse. Curtis Jones, making his first Champions League start since joining Inter from Liverpool, played a loose ball toward center-back Yan Bisseck. Kylian Mbappé intercepted the pass and fed Brahim Díaz, who immediately returned the ball. Mbappé swept it home for his 71st Champions League goal.

Federico Valverde doubled the lead minutes later. Goalkeeper Josep Martínez held the ball too long inside his own penalty area, allowing Valverde to close him down and turn the loose ball into the net. Real Madrid had not created significant chances before the second goal.

In the 36-team single-league phase format, home victories against top-tier European rivals are critical for securing a direct top-eight round-of-16 berth and avoiding the play-off round. Inter Milan’s commitment to building out from the back, combined with Real Madrid’s counter-pressing structure, created the conditions for both errors.

Jones attempted to make amends before halftime. After a passing sequence involving Lautaro Martínez, Jones turned inside the box and struck the crossbar with a curling effort. The ball grazed the top of the frame and went out of play.

Jude Bellingham missed two opportunities to extend Real Madrid’s lead. Just before halftime, Mbappé’s mazy run ended with a shot that Josep Martínez saved into Bellingham’s path, but the England midfielder’s point-blank effort was blocked by Martínez. Díaz could not convert on the third attempt. In the second half, Díaz’s pass left Bellingham with an open goal, but he attempted to chest the ball down and finish, allowing Martínez to recover and make the save.

Inter Milan generated more shots and held more possession across the 90 minutes. Thibaut Courtois made six critical saves during high-pressure spells, including stops on Thuram, Lautaro Martínez, and a second-half attempt from Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Carlos Augusto scored in the 75th minute to set up a tense finish. Lautaro Martínez crossed from the left side of the box, and Augusto tapped the ball into the net from close range. Inter pushed for an equalizer during the final 15 minutes, but Courtois made additional saves to preserve the result.
