Victor Wembanyama Rejects Sports Betting Endorsements, Drawing Line Against NBA’s Growing Gambling Partnerships
The Spurs center says he has turned down massive paydays to avoid endorsing gambling platforms, contrasting with recent moves by LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Victor Wembanyama has drawn a definitive line between his off-court earning potential and the sports gambling industry, publicly refusing to promote betting platforms despite their rapid proliferation across professional basketball.
The San Antonio Spurs center addressed the topic Thursday following a training camp workout in San Antonio, stating he would never endorse a sportsbook or prediction market. He characterized the trend of active players aligning with gambling operators as “very sad,” while acknowledging that peers are free to make their own choices.
Wembanyama’s stance places him directly at odds with several of the league’s most prominent figures who have recently secured equity stakes or ambassadorships with betting companies. The integration of gambling into mainstream basketball marketing has accelerated sharply since the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the federal ban on sports wagering in 2018, transforming what was once an illicit fringe activity into a multi-billion-dollar corporate sector heavily subsidized by professional sports leagues.
LeBron James transitioned from a partnership with DraftKings to a deal with the prediction market platform Polymarket in September. Kevin Durant holds a promotional relationship with FanDuel alongside an investment in Kalshi. Giannis Antetokounmpo announced his own shareholder position at Kalshi in February through a post on X that he later deleted. Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic signed on as the first brand ambassador for Superbet in Serbia in 2023.
These partnerships operate within boundaries established by the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement. Under current rules, the league treats traditional sportsbooks and newer prediction markets identically regarding player endorsements. Players are strictly prohibited from promoting wagering on any NBA-related market. However, they retain the right to endorse gambling companies operating outside basketball and hold de minimis equity investments in those firms, provided specific restrictions are met. This regulatory framework attempts to balance the league’s lucrative official partnerships with betting operators against the fundamental need to protect game integrity.
For Wembanyama, the decision reflects a broader recalibration of how he evaluates commercial opportunities entering his fourth NBA season. He stated that financial compensation no longer dictates his endorsement choices, noting he has previously turned down deals worth significantly more than his accepted partnerships because they conflicted with his personal values.
“We earn millions and millions. This is not our biggest strength,” Wembanyama said. “Our biggest strength is inspiring. I want to inspire in a good way. That’s the strongest thing I can do.”
This philosophy aligns with a historical tension in professional sports between maximizing short-term revenue and protecting long-term brand equity. While veteran players often leverage late-career visibility into lucrative gambling sponsorships, younger stars face different reputational calculations. International players like Wembanyama also navigate varying cultural attitudes toward gambling; France, for example, maintains stricter advertising regulations around sports betting than the United States, overseen by the Autorité Nationale des Jeux.
The 22-year-old Frenchman arrives at training camp carrying substantial momentum. San Antonio advanced to the NBA Finals last season for the first time since 2014, a run anchored by Wembanyama’s defensive dominance. The two-time All-Star became the first player in league history to win the Defensive Player of the Year award unanimously after leading the NBA in blocked shots for a third consecutive season. He also finished third in MVP voting.
San Antonio opens its regular season schedule later this month as Wembanyama continues his pursuit of a first championship ring.
