Smilla Sundell vs. Aline Pereira: Contender Series Week 10

Former ONE Muay Thai champion Smilla Sundell seeks a UFC contract against veteran striker Aline Pereira at the UFC Apex on Tuesday.

A former ONE Championship Muay Thai titleholder is attempting to fast-track her way into the UFC roster Tuesday night, bringing a 5-foot-10 frame and an undefeated professional mixed martial arts record to Dana White’s Contender Series Week 10.

Smilla Sundell faces Aline Pereira in a women’s bantamweight bout where the contrast between elite striking pedigree and cross-discipline experience defines the matchup. Sundell enters as a heavy -450 betting favorite, while Pereira sits at +350 underdog odds, according to BetOnline.

The Contender Series operates under a specific set of stakes that separates it from standard regional cards. Fighters are not competing for rankings or traditional purses alone; they are auditioning directly for UFC contracts. Dana White and matchmakers evaluate performances live, awarding deals almost exclusively to fighters who demonstrate finishing ability and championship potential. Decisions rarely earn contracts, a structural reality that heavily favors Sundell’s aggressive profile over Pereira’s decision-heavy resume.

Sundell (2-0) has stopped both of her professional MMA opponents inside the distance. Competing on the Tuff-N-Uff regional circuit, she secured a first-round TKO against Miranda Barber on Jan. 22 using knees and elbows, followed by a second-round stoppage of Maya Stewart on June 5 via punches and knees. Fight Matrix currently ranks her No. 42 among active women’s bantamweights globally — a rare placement for a fighter with only two professional appearances.

Her transition to MMA carries significant historical weight in combat sports. Sundell captured the ONE Women’s Strawweight Muay Thai World Championship at 17, making her one of the youngest world champions in the promotion’s history. Moving from pure Muay Thai to mixed martial arts requires adapting to takedown threats, ground exchanges, and different glove sizes, which alter defensive mechanics. Fighters crossing over from elite striking backgrounds often struggle initially with grappling defense, though Sundell’s height advantage at bantamweight allows her to dictate range and defend level changes more effectively than shorter strikers.

Pereira (3-2) relies on a different tactical foundation. All three of her professional victories have come by decision, including a split-decision win over Jade Masson-Wong at MVP MMA 1 on May 16 and a prior victory against Nejra Repp at LFA 222. She arrives on a two-fight winning streak.

Her background extends beyond standard MMA circuits. Pereira holds a Karate Combat championship and previously challenged for a GLORY kickboxing title. She is also widely recognized in combat sports through her family lineage, carrying the Pereira surname associated with former UFC champion Alex Pereira. Despite that recognition, her path to a UFC contract on Tuesday requires disrupting Sundell’s rhythm rather than matching her output.

For Pereira to secure a contract, she must neutralize Sundell’s clinch entries and force resets. Sundell’s primary weapons — straight kicks, knees from the Thai plum, and elbow strikes in close quarters — thrive when opponents settle into predictable exchanges. Pereira’s most viable strategy involves lateral movement, measured boxing combinations, and exiting angles before Sundell can establish prolonged physical control.

Women’s bantamweight remains one of the UFC’s thinner divisions following years of roster turnover after Ronda Rousey’s departure and Amanda Nunes’ retirement. The promotion actively uses the Contender Series to replenish the 135-pound weight class with prospects who possess marketable backstories and immediate finishing upside. Sundell fits both criteria as a 20-year-old crossover champion with a recognizable international profile.

Contender Series Week 10 broadcasts Tuesday from the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The card also features matchups including Will Rentz against Luis Francischinelli and Douglas da Lapa facing Davi Cabral.
