Saints Place Travis Etienne Jr. on Injured Reserve After Hamstring Setback

Hamstring setback sidelines RB for minimum four games as Saints restructure backfield ahead of Falcons matchup

The New Orleans Saints have placed running back Travis Etienne Jr. on injured reserve following a recurring hamstring injury, guaranteeing his absence for at least the next four games. The move, confirmed Wednesday, forces an immediate restructuring of the team’s backfield as they prepare for a critical NFC South matchup against the Atlanta Falcons on Monday night.

Etienne sustained the injury during the Week 3 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. Although he had been listed on the injury report earlier in the week with a hamstring issue, he participated fully in Friday’s practice and was cleared to play. Head coach Kellen Moore stated that the setback occurred in the same leg that had been problematic during practice, suggesting the initial recovery timeline may have been overly optimistic or that the tissue had not sufficiently healed to withstand game-speed stress.

Under NFL rules, players placed on injured reserve must miss a minimum of four regular-season contests. This means Etienne will be ineligible to return until Week 8 at the earliest, when the Saints host the Los Angeles Chargers on October 25. That potential return date aligns with the league’s standard IR designation window and provides a concrete benchmark for fantasy managers and bettors tracking his availability.

The timing complicates an already fluid rotation. Alvin Kamara, who missed the season opener while recovering from a knee injury, has gradually resumed a larger workload but is still being managed carefully. In the Raiders game, Etienne handled 19 carries for 57 yards before exiting, after which Kamara received six attempts and Kendre Miller added four. Kamara currently sits second on the team with 18 carries for 51 yards across two appearances, while Miller has 13 carries for 44 yards and one touchdown despite being a healthy scratch in Week 2.

With Etienne sidelined, the Saints are expected to deploy a three-man committee against Atlanta featuring Kamara, Miller, and rookie CJ Donaldson. Donaldson, an undrafted free agent out of Ohio State, has seen limited offensive snaps but is considered a viable short-yardage option based on his collegiate production and preseason performance. His elevation to a primary backup role underscores the lack of established depth behind the top two veterans.

Etienne’s injury history adds context to the severity of this setback. Since entering the league in 2021, he has dealt with multiple lower-body soft-tissue issues, including a Lisfranc fracture that cost him his entire rookie season and recurring hamstring strains in subsequent years. Hamstring injuries in skill-position players carry a notably high recurrence rate within the first month of return, particularly when athletes clear practice protocols quickly. The fact that Etienne practiced fully just two days before reaggravating the same muscle raises questions about load management and diagnostic imaging thresholds used during his clearance process.

For the Saints’ offense, the loss removes a between-the-tackles runner who had begun establishing rhythm as the primary early-down option. Etienne averaged 3.0 yards per carry through three games, below his career average, but his volume indicated the coaching staff’s intent to feature him heavily to preserve Kamara’s health over the long term. Without him, defensive coordinators can now key more aggressively on Kamara’s routes and outside runs, potentially reducing explosive-play opportunities in an offense that has struggled to sustain drives consistently.

New Orleans activated no additional running backs from the practice squad following the IR transaction, indicating confidence in the current trio or plans to evaluate external options later in the week. Roster moves typically occur closer to game day, leaving open the possibility of a promotion if Donaldson’s snap count increases significantly in practice or if medical evaluations reveal lingering concerns with Kamara’s knee.
