Lafayette Parish High School Football Enters District Play with Five Undefeated Teams
Five area teams unbeaten; three still seeking first win as postseason implications intensify

LAFAYETTE, La. — District play arrives this week for Lafayette Parish and surrounding area high school football teams, raising the stakes for five local squads that have navigated the non-district slate without a loss.
Westgate, Beau Chene, Eunice, Notre Dame and Westminster Christian Academy-Lafayette each enter Week 7 at either 6-0 or 5-0. In Louisiana’s playoff structure, district records determine postseason seeding and automatic berths, making every game from this point forward an elimination-style contest for positioning.
“Non-district games are for preparation; district games are for survival,” said a veteran area coach who requested anonymity to speak candidly about opponents. “One loss in district can drop you from a top-two seed to a wild-card spot on the road.”
The Tigers of Westgate, perennial contenders in Class 4A, have leaned on a defense allowing fewer than 10 points per game. Beau Chene and Eunice have relied on balanced offenses in 3A and 4A respectively, while Notre Dame and Westminster Christian have dominated smaller-classification schedules.
At the other end of the spectrum, three programs remain winless. Highland Baptist, Breaux Bridge and Port Barre are searching for their first victories as district openers offer a reset. Teurlings Catholic broke through last week with a 49-14 win over Acadiana Renaissance Charter Academy, providing a template for struggling teams.
“That first district win changes everything — practice energy, community support, the kids’ belief,” said the coach. “We’ve seen 0-6 teams make playoff runs after a district-opening upset.”
Louisiana’s expanded playoff format, which admits all teams in most classifications, means even winless squads control their destiny. But seeding advantages — home-field advantage through early rounds, avoidance of powerhouse programs until later stages — hinge on district standings.
Key Week 7 matchups include Westgate hosting Northside in a 4A-District 3 opener, Beau Chene traveling to North Vermilion, and Eunice welcoming Crowley. Notre Dame and Westminster Christian open district play on the road.
The LHSAA power ratings, which blend win-loss record with strength of schedule, will update Sunday. Several area teams on the bubble of the top 16 in their divisions — critical for hosting a first-round playoff game — need strong district starts to climb the rankings.
Friday’s full slate kicks off at 7 p.m. across the parish. Live scoring updates will be available throughout the night.
