Bitcoin Touches $66,000 as Middle East De-escalation Triggers Rally in Risk Assets
Crypto markets climb alongside equities as US-Iran strike pause lowers oil prices and forces $250 million in short liquidations.
A broader appetite for risk assets pushed Bitcoin toward the $66,000 threshold as trading opened in New York on Monday, fueled by signs of military de-escalation between the United States and Iran alongside diplomatic discussions to unblock critical maritime trade routes.
The shift in sentiment followed reports that Iranian and Omani officials are negotiating potential traffic protocols for the Strait of Hormuz. The strategic waterway, through which approximately one-fifth of the world’s petroleum supply passes, had experienced disruptions following recent regional hostilities. News of an operational pause in cross-border strikes prompted an immediate reaction across global commodities and equity indexes, easing concerns over energy-driven inflationary spikes.
Energy markets responded swiftly to the potential diplomatic breakthrough. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil futures retreated toward $82 per barrel before stabilizing. Simultaneously, Wall Street benchmark indexes opened in positive territory, with both the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite climbing approximately 0.3%.

The sudden upward price movement caught leveraged bearish traders off guard. Derivative tracking metrics from analytics firm CoinGlass revealed that crypto short liquidations approached $250 million within a 24-hour window, accelerating the upward momentum as automated buy orders triggered to cover leveraged positions.

From a technical perspective, Sunday’s weekly candle close saw Bitcoin successfully defend two crucial daily trendlines: the 21-day simple moving average (SMA) at $64,289 and the 50-day SMA at $63,261. Independent analyst Michaël van de Poppe noted that while maintaining these levels signals constructive buyer positioning for long trades, underlying price stability remains delicate.

Institutional commentary highlights that digital assets have exhibited resilience relative to legacy financial instruments. Trading firm QCP Capital noted in market analysis that cryptocurrency markets outperformed traditional equities throughout July despite headwind pressures from elevated US Treasury yields. The firm also highlighted that market participants are closely monitoring progress on the Clarity Act, a legislative proposal currently undergoing congressional review aimed at establishing a definitive regulatory structure for digital assets in the United States.
