Arsenal‘s decision-makers have given internal approval to explore an ambitious move for Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior, setting the stage for a potential marquee transfer attempt as the Gunners reorganize their attacking options.

The London club pivoted toward the Brazilian international after losing out on primary target Morgan Rogers. Chelsea recently secured Rogers in a club-record £117 million deal after Arsenal declined to match the offer. With Gabriel Martinelli poised to depart the Emirates Stadium, manager Mikel Arteta is keen on adding a proven world-class attacker on the left flank, despite having already completed the acquisition of Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge.

While no formal talks have been initiated between the two clubs, Arsenal are evaluating the situation as contract negotiations between Vinicius and Madrid remain deadlocked. Real Madrid face potential financial pressure, as letting the forward enter the final year of his deal increases the risk of losing him on a free transfer next summer, while also triggering a substantial loyalty bonus clause due to the player next season.

Spanish media outlet El Debate previously indicated that Madrid could consider bids in the region of £77 million to avoid a total financial loss on the player. Any prospective deal hinges on navigating significant financial commitments. Vinicius currently earns a base wage of £410,000 per week in Spain and could command a salary exceeding £500,000 weekly in England. Such terms would place him alongside Manchester City’s Erling Haaland as one of the highest earners in English football, presenting a major shift in Arsenal’s existing salary framework.

A potential transaction also faces managerial resistance in Spain. Real Madrid head coach Jose Mourinho, who recently returned for a second stint in charge after previously leading the club between 2010 and 2013 according to BBC Sport coverage of European football, is determined to preserve his core squad and could block any high-profile departures this summer.
