Ember Ditches App Reliance With Mug 3 Hardware Update
Third-generation model adds a physical base button, dishwasher-safe components, and consolidates the travel lineup with the Tumbler 2.

Ember Technologies eliminated the Bluetooth requirement for its core product this week. The third-generation smart mug, released eight years after the company’s initial launch, shifts temperature control directly to a physical button on the base of the vessel.
The hardware change addresses persistent connectivity complaints that plagued earlier models. Users no longer need a paired smartphone to adjust heat settings. A single press cycles through five presets starting at 125 degrees Fahrenheit, increasing in five-degree increments up to 145 degrees.
Placing the control mechanism on the bottom of a container holding hot liquid introduces an obvious ergonomic compromise. Pressing it requires tilting a full mug and applying firm downward pressure. Ember previously relied entirely on software interfaces for these adjustments, a strategy common among Silicon Valley hardware startups attempting to minimize manufacturing complexity during early production runs.

The Mug 3 is the first model in the lineup rated for top-rack dishwasher cleaning. Previous versions required hand washing due to exposed charging contacts and non-sealed electronics. Battery capacity now supports three hours of active heating away from the proprietary charging coaster. (The unit remains incompatible with microwaves.)
Bluetooth pairing survives as a secondary option. The companion application still dictates specific beverage profiles—136 degrees for black coffee, 132 for green tea, 142 for lemon water—and allows custom configurations outside the five-button hardware limits.
Pricing holds steady against recent inflationary pressures in consumer electronics. The 10-ounce model retails for $129 in black, white, and stainless steel. The 14-ounce version costs $149 and expands the palette to eight finishes, including sage green, lavender, powder blue, salt blue, sandstone, matcha green, white, and black.
A sliding spill-prevention lid ships standard with both sizes.
Ember simultaneously restructured its portable lineup. The new Tumbler 2 consolidates two older products—the Travel Mug 2 and the original Tumbler—into a single 16-ounce chassis. The redesigned profile specifically targets standard automotive cup holders, a dimension previous travel models frequently failed to accommodate. It sells for $179 in black. The outgoing Travel Mug 2 remains available only until existing inventory clears.
Retail distribution spans Ember’s direct website, Target, and Amazon.
