Crypto Rebounds Past $86,000 as Revenue Protocols Drive Gains
Token buyback clarity and Wall Street expansion fuel institutional and DeFi momentum.

Digital assets opened the final quarter of the year on firm footing, anchored by Bitcoin maintaining strength above $86,000 while cash-generating decentralized protocols surged alongside fresh institutional market initiatives.
Bitcoin climbed above $86,500 over the weekend before settling near $86,150, marking an 8.5% gain across the trailing 30 days. Ethereum maintained pace at $2,720, up 11% during the same window. The upward momentum coincided with a turnaround in spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds, which gathered $134.4 million across two consecutive sessions—including $31.7 million on Friday and $102.7 million on Thursday—reversing a sharp $148.7 million outflow that closed out September.

Rather than moving purely on speculative retail liquidity, current market performance reflects an accelerating rotation into decentralized protocols demonstrating organic treasury income. Solana-based fee engine Pump.fun led all decentralized platforms with $17.9 million in weekly revenue, sending its associated asset higher by 26.2%. LayerZero posted a 19.8% gain, while established decentralized finance mainstays Aave and Sky logged double-digit weekly advances.
The appetite for revenue-bearing assets received a substantial tailwind after the Securities and Exchange Commission clarified that programmatic token repurchases do not automatically classify an underlying asset as a security provided the network remains operational. Protocols have moved swiftly to leverage that position. Decentralized derivatives platform Hyperliquid launched automated HYPE buybacks using accumulated USDC fees via its AQAV2 engine.
The distinction between fee-producing utility and unbacked speculative liquidity has simultaneously driven structural consolidation across the sector. Ethereum layer-2 network Blast permanently ceased operations on Friday. The network once commanded over $2 billion in total value locked during peak incentives, yet failed to retain sustained user engagement once distribution rewards expired.
Traditional finance and digital asset infrastructure continue to merge at an accelerated clip. OKX and Intercontinental Exchange, the parent organization of the New York Stock Exchange, jointly submitted regulatory filings with the SEC to debut OKXICE, an alternative venue designed to offer tokenized stock trading for an initial roster of 63 NYSE-listed companies. Tokenized debt expanded as well, with Plume rolling out nBND, an onchain financial instrument backed directly by Fidelity’s $28 billion Total Bond ETF.
Wall Street research desks are taking notice of the sector’s evolving revenue models. Bank of America raised its price objective for Coinbase to $203 from $174, maintaining a Buy rating. The investment bank lifted its long-term corporate earnings forecasts through 2028, pointing to sustained stablecoin reserve income following benchmark interest rate movements by the Federal Reserve.
Yet friction with legacy finance remains acute. The Independent Community Bankers of America filed a federal lawsuit against the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency on Friday, attempting to block national trust charters awarded to digital asset custodians like Protego. The banking lobby argued that national trust structures allow crypto enterprises to bypass crucial capitalization rules and Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation mandates while operating as de facto commercial lenders.
Security realities continue to dictate operational risk across platforms. Blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis confirmed that North Korean state-backed cyber units orchestrated the recent $387 million Bitget exploit, moving stolen capital through Ethereum, XRP, Zcash, and Tron via 23 separate transactions. The incident pushed total state-sponsored digital asset thefts above $1 billion this calendar year, while NEAR Intents successfully recovered $3.8 million drained during a separate security vulnerability after delivering a 48-hour recovery ultimatum to the exploiter.
On the development front, the Ethereum Foundation rolled out zkAPI, a zero-knowledge payment rails mechanism enabling privacy-preserving micropayments for artificial intelligence models using ETH and USDC, while prediction market operator Polymarket signaled a potential native governance token debut later this week.
