Balde Frozen Out as Flick’s Barcelona Reshapes Its Defense

Xavi Espart moves ahead of Balde and Cancelo in Barcelona’s defensive pecking order

Hansi Flick’s rigorous selection process has reshaped Barcelona’s defensive hierarchy, with younger academy prospects securing places in the first-team rotation while long-standing starters remain on the bench. The German manager assumed control of the Catalan club ahead of the 2024–25 campaign following the departure of Xavi Hernández.

Alejandro Balde’s complete absence from the pitch is particularly striking after two seasons as Barcelona’s primary option at left-back. The 20-year-old La Masia product broke into the first team during the 2021–22 season and became a regular starter during the club’s 2022–23 La Liga championship run, effectively succeeding longtime veteran Jordi Alba.

Barcelona signed Balde to a long-term contract extension in September 2023, running through June 2028 and including a €1 billion release clause. His 2023–24 campaign ended abruptly in January 2024, when he suffered a severe right hamstring tendon injury during a Copa del Rey quarterfinal against Athletic Bilbao. He underwent surgery in Finland and missed the remainder of the season.

Although Balde was subject to transfer speculation during the summer trading window, he remained at Barcelona. As the club opened its competitive schedule, however, a reshuffled hierarchy left him sidelined. Flick discussed the situation during a Tuesday news conference focused on the intense internal competition influencing his tactical choices.

Barcelona currently has five natural full-backs in the senior squad: three specialized on the left and two on the right, according to Flick. João Cancelo provides another option, having joined on loan from Manchester City during the 2023–24 season and being capable of playing on either side of the field. He had widely been expected to anchor the flank or compete for the starting position alongside Balde.

Instead, the starting role has gone to Xavi Espart. Another La Masia product who progressed through Barcelona’s development teams, Espart earned his place in the starting XI after strong pre-season displays. His rapid adaptation to top-flight demands exceeded pre-season expectations, Flick said, while high standards in training and matches have allowed the young defender to stay ahead of both Cancelo and Balde.

Flick addressed Balde’s lack of playing time directly, describing it as a consequence of managing a deep squad rather than a disciplinary measure or a lack of personal confidence in the player. “It is normal for a player to find it difficult when they are not receiving minutes, especially after playing such a major role over the previous two years,” Flick said during Tuesday’s press briefing.

The manager also rejected suggestions that Balde’s exclusion reflected a loss of trust. He said competition for places remains healthy and necessary for a club competing in domestic and European competitions, adding that Barcelona has two to three viable options in almost every position on the pitch. Flick described that tactical flexibility as an asset for the institution, even as managing player morale creates a constant administrative challenge.

Barcelona is playing its fixtures at the temporary home of the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys on Montjuïc while Spotify Camp Nou undergoes extensive renovations. The demanding La Liga and UEFA Champions League schedule may eventually force rotation across the backline, but reports currently place Balde at the bottom of Barcelona’s left-back depth chart. With Espart holding the starting spot and additional full-back coverage available, Balde will need to capitalize on future training sessions or eventual fixture-driven rotations to re-establish himself in Flick’s matchday plans.
