Arsenal Tracks Rodrygo as Real Madrid’s Attack Gets Crowded

Arsenal keeps Rodrygo on its shortlist while monitoring his ACL recovery

LONDON — Arsenal is continuing to lay the groundwork for a potential move for Real Madrid forward Rodrygo, with the club closely monitoring the Brazilian international’s recovery from a major knee injury. The long-term strategy is aimed at bolstering Mikel Arteta’s attacking options.

Rodrygo’s versatility is a key attraction for Arteta. He can play across the entire front line, including both flanks and as a central fluid attacker. Bukayo Saka has cemented his starting role on the right wing, while a versatile forward would provide elite competition and depth alongside Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard on the left side.

According to reports from TeamTalk, Arsenal has maintained active lines of communication with the 23-year-old’s representatives. The club’s recruitment department has kept Rodrygo high on its transfer shortlist despite the physical setback he suffered earlier this year.

Since his €45 million (approximately $48 million) transfer from Brazilian club Santos to Real Madrid in 2019, Rodrygo has established himself as an elite offensive talent in European football. In 297 senior appearances for the Spanish powerhouse, he has registered 71 goals and 57 assists.

The forward tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during a La Liga match against Getafe in March. His rehabilitation progress is expected to dictate the timing and viability of any future transfer bid, while Arsenal’s medical status assessment remains a pivotal element in a transfer file that has stayed active for several months.

Real Madrid’s medical department initially projected a return to competitive play in the New Year. Rodrygo’s recovery, however, has progressed ahead of schedule: he has already resumed light running on the training pitch and is reportedly determined to beat the club’s official timeline by returning to action before the winter break.

Rodrygo’s long-term contract extension with Real Madrid runs until June 2028, leaving the Spanish club under no immediate pressure to sell and positioned to command a premium transfer fee. At the Santiago Bernabéu, though, squad dynamics have grown increasingly competitive since the arrival of French superstar Kylian Mbappé in the summer of 2024.

Real Madrid’s attacking unit already features Ballon d’Or contender Vinícius Júnior and England international Jude Bellingham. The high concentration of starting-caliber forwards has led to ongoing speculation regarding Rodrygo’s long-term prominence in Carlo Ancelotti’s starting eleven once he returns to full fitness.

Before his injury, Rodrygo was positioned near the very top of Arsenal’s summer transfer shortlist for left-sided attacking targets. The Premier League club had previously held preliminary discussions regarding the forward and maintained regular contact with Real Madrid throughout the summer transfer window to gauge his availability.

Reports suggest Arsenal remains poised to test Real Madrid’s resolve as early as the January transfer window. Any formal offer is expected to be contingent on a complete medical assessment of Rodrygo’s knee, while Arsenal’s recruitment team continues to keep a watchful eye on his recovery process and position the club to act swiftly should an opening present itself in future transfer windows.
