Liverpool Pushes Ahead as Lamine Camara’s £60m Race Intensifies
Liverpool advances pursuit as Monaco raises Camara’s price

Liverpool has opened preliminary discussions with Lamine Camara’s representatives as the race for one of French football’s brightest young talents intensifies. Sporting director Richard Hughes is also conducting extensive background checks on the AS Monaco midfielder, whose profile has attracted several of the Premier League’s wealthiest clubs.
Camara was born on January 1, 2004, in Diouloulou, Senegal, and developed at Académie Génération Foot. The famed Senegalese academy produced former Liverpool star Sadio Mané, Tottenham’s Pape Matar Sarr, and Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson. Before moving to Monaco, Camara helped FC Metz earn promotion to Ligue 1.
The midfielder joined Monaco from Metz in July 2024 for a reported €15 million, approximately £12.5 million. He signed a contract running until June 2029, but Monaco’s valuation has since climbed. Reports indicate that the Ligue 1 club will demand a fee in the region of £60 million ($76 million) in the upcoming windows.

Liverpool’s recruitment team is seeking dynamic, high-intensity profiles for the engine room under head coach Arne Slot, who succeeded Jürgen Klopp in June 2024. Hughes previously worked at AFC Bournemouth alongside manager Andoni Iraola and has prioritized versatile midfielders able to execute aggressive pressing while maintaining possession under pressure.
Camara’s high-volume ball recovery, physical endurance, and rapid transitions from defense to attack fit the tactical demands of Slot’s system. Liverpool has frequently used a fluid double-pivot midfield this season, a structure that has unlocked the potential of players such as Ryan Gravenberch. The recruitment department nevertheless remains focused on adding elite young talent and strengthening squad depth.
Chelsea came remarkably close to signing Camara in the final days of the summer transfer window. Negotiations reached advanced stages around a projected £47 million ($59.5 million) package, but the move did not materialize before the deadline. The West London club remains highly attentive to his development as part of its strategy to recruit the world’s premier young talent.
Camara quickly established himself as a starter for Monaco in domestic league play and the UEFA Champions League after making the move to the Principality. His transition to European football followed a rapid rise with Metz, where he had helped secure promotion to Ligue 1.
His international progress has been equally swift. Camara was named the CAF Young Player of the Year in 2023 after leading Senegal to titles at the African Nations Championship (CHAN) and the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, where he was named the tournament’s best player. He later became a regular in Senegal’s senior national team and scored twice during the group stage of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Arsenal and Manchester City are also keeping close tabs on the 20-year-old midfielder. Manchester City is assessing long-term midfield solutions after Spain international Rodri suffered a season-ending knee injury. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is seeking youthful athleticism in a midfield that includes several players entering the final stages of their contracts.
Liverpool scouts have repeatedly watched Camara in person this season, including during Monaco’s high-profile domestic clashes against Paris Saint-Germain. Monaco signed him only recently, but with Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manchester City monitoring the situation, the club is positioned to command a premium fee if a bidding war begins in 2025.
