Coventry End 25-Year Premier League Wait at Nottingham Forest

Jay Dasilva's goal gives Coventry their first Premier League points

NOTTINGHAM, England — Coventry City secured their first Premier League points of the season with a 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Saturday, ending a 25-year top-flight goal and victory drought.

The club was an original founding member of the Premier League in 1992 and maintained a continuous 34-year run in the English top flight before suffering relegation in May 2001. After leaving the top division, Coventry endured severe financial distress, administration and stadium disputes, including temporary groundshares at Northampton Town’s Sixfields Stadium and Birmingham City’s St Andrew’s.

Defender Jay Dasilva scored the match’s solitary goal, giving the Sky Blues their first top-tier league goal and victory since May 2001. The result also snapped a four-game losing streak to open the campaign and delivered manager Frank Lampard his first league win since taking charge of the newly promoted club in the top division.

By 2017, Coventry had fallen to EFL League Two, the fourth tier of English football. The club then engineered a multi-year rise through the divisions, reaching the Championship playoff final in May 2023 and the FA Cup semifinals in April 2024 before completing their return to the Premier League.

Nottingham Forest thought they had drawn level late in the second half when forward Igor Jesus put the ball past the goalkeeper. A Video Assistant Referee review determined that a foul had occurred during the build-up, negating the goal and allowing Coventry to hold their lead until the final whistle.

Following the win, Lampard praised his squad’s determination after a difficult stretch to start the schedule. “I feel great, I feel amazing,” Lampard told Sky Sports. “The way the players worked for it. [It is a] tough place to come we knew that having lost our first four games all in different circumstances it’s easy to think negatively and think where is the goal and where it the win coming from?”

Lampard said tactical discipline and hard work were essential to grinding out a result on the road. “The reality in football is you have to fight for it, you have to work for it, you have to have organisation,” Lampard said. “I can go through so many players today and how they worked. You make your own luck in terms of VAR, I think it was a foul but when you work that hard I think the boys deserve it. It’s huge mentally for the team.”

The manager also addressed the adjustment period for roster members competing in England’s top division for the first time. “Not everyone is a Wayne Rooney or a superstar that can just own it,” Lampard said. “This can now hopefully give us confidence. The boys today have shown they can do it.”

Premier League play now pauses for a two-week international fixture window. Coventry City will resume its schedule at home against Newcastle United, followed by an away match against Tottenham Hotspur.
