Tottenham Weighs Free-Agent Move for Mauro Icardi
Icardi’s free-agent status puts Tottenham among the clubs monitoring his next move

LONDON — Tottenham Hotspur is assessing the free-agent market as it looks to strengthen its attacking options, with Mauro Icardi emerging as a potential target. The 33-year-old Argentine striker is unattached after completing a four-year tenure with Turkish Süper Lig champions Galatasaray.
Icardi’s representatives had previously held discussions with Serie A side Lazio, according to Italian sports outlet *Calciomercato*. Those negotiations have cooled, leaving room for other European clubs to enter the race while the transfer window dynamics continue to shift.

The forward’s record includes 124 goals in 219 appearances during a six-year spell with Inter Milan, where he also served as club captain. Icardi joined Inter from Sampdoria in 2013 after rising to prominence in Italy, and he won the Capocannoniere twice as Serie A’s joint-top scorer, in the 2014–15 and 2017–18 seasons.
His later move to Paris Saint-Germain began as a loan in 2019 before becoming a €50 million permanent transfer. Icardi won two Ligue 1 titles with the French club, while his subsequent time at Galatasaray restored his goal-scoring form and helped the Istanbul side secure back-to-back league titles.
Tottenham’s interest would come within a different tactical and financial framework under head coach Roberto De Zerbi. The Italian manager is known for a demanding, possession-heavy, high-pressing system and is seeking dependable depth across the frontline as the club handles domestic and European commitments.
Icardi’s profile, however, is that of an orthodox, low-mobility “poacher,” unlike the dynamic, hard-pressing forwards De Zerbi has generally favored. At Sassuolo, Shakhtar Donetsk, and Brighton & Hove Albion, De Zerbi prioritized fluid attacking rotations and defensive work rate from his central strikers.
A player with Icardi’s specific skill set could therefore require a tactical adjustment and potentially serve as an alternative “Plan B” rather than the focal point of the starting eleven. Tottenham’s squad-building approach also makes the possibility notable: under technical director Johan Lange, the club has consistently pursued younger players with high developmental ceilings and long-term resale value.
Brennan Johnson, Micky van de Ven, and Archie Gray are examples of that recruitment strategy. A 33-year-old free agent would not require a transfer fee, although the deal would likely involve a substantial wage package and a short-term contract commitment.
That structure would limit long-term financial risk while raising immediate questions over squad balance and the playing time available to younger developmental prospects already on the roster. Tottenham’s internal discussions remain preliminary with the European season underway, and Icardi’s high-profile free-agent status means other continental clubs are likely to monitor his availability as the transfer window dynamics continue to shift.
