Knicks’ Title Celebration Masks Rotational Cracks in 106-100 Loss to 76ers

Towns' foul trouble reveals depth concerns before Celtics test

The championship banner rose to the Madison Square Garden rafters Tuesday night. The rings glittered on fingers. Then the game started, and the New York Knicks discovered that ceremony does not solve rotational math.

Karl-Anthony Towns played 23 minutes in his Knicks debut. Foul trouble sidelined the center for long stretches of a 106-100 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers, exposing a roster construction question that the pregame festivities temporarily obscured: how does New York survive the non-Towns minutes against elite opposition?

Towns finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds, including two fourth-quarter three-pointers that briefly made the final margin respectable. But his first-half fouls — three before halftime — forced coach Tom Thibodeau into extended small-ball lineups that Philadelphia exploited. The 76ers outscored New York by 14 points during Towns’ bench time, per NBA.com tracking data.

The Knicks’ offseason trade for Towns sent Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo to Minnesota, removing two rotation pillars who combined for 48 minutes per game last season. Their replacements — Precious Achiuwa, Miles McBride, and rookie Tyler Kolek — have yet to prove they can sustain winning basketball against playoff-caliber defenses.

Philadelphia’s defensive scheme, which LeBron James discussed on his podcast this week, dared New York’s perimeter players to beat them off the dribble. The Knicks shot 31% from three-point range. Jalen Brunson scored 24 points but required 22 shots to get there.

Friday’s visit to Boston presents a far sterner examination. The Celtics return essentially the same rotation that won 64 games and a title last season. They have not yet played a meaningful game in 2024-25. New York has 48 hours to answer questions that a banner ceremony could not.
