Jaguars’ Defensive Crisis Deepens as Secondary Injuries Mount During London Loss

Secondary injuries force scheme simplification as division lead narrows

LONDON — The Jacksonville Jaguars returned from Wembley Stadium with a 34-31 loss to the Houston Texans and a secondary held together by duct tape and practice-squad promotions. Coach Liam Coen confirmed Monday that cornerback Antonio Johnson exited the game, safety Eric Murray only recently returned, and Kaevon Merriweather remains largely untested. The result: a communication breakdown that Coen admitted coaches must simplify the playbook to manage.

Jacksonville still sits 4-2 atop the AFC South with a two-game cushion, but the defensive trajectory is alarming. The Texans’ C.J. Stroud dissected the Jaguars’ patchwork secondary for much of the afternoon, exploiting coverage gaps that Coen attributed to “inventory” limitations rather than scheme. The Jaguars’ pressure rates were acceptable, Coen said, but Houston neutralized the rush with quick releases — a formula opponents will replicate.

Offensively, the Jaguars produced 31 points without turning the ball over. Trevor Lawrence earned Coen’s explicit endorsement through six games. The running game found efficiency, if not explosiveness, and kicker Cam Little continues to expand the playbook with his range — Coen cited Little’s reliability as a factor in aggressive fourth-down decisions. Rookie tight end Nate Boerkircher scored in the red zone. Wide receiver Josh Cameron plays significant snaps. The offense is functional.

The defense is not. Beyond the secondary, Coen acknowledged defensive end Bryan Thomas Jr. needs more pass-rush opportunities. Interior linemen Wesley Williams and Albert Regis earned praise for practice-week contributions, not game-day impact. The Jaguars’ bye week arrives at a critical juncture: Coen plans to dedicate the break to situational football — end-of-half, end-of-game scenarios — and fundamental technique cleanup in coverage and blocking.

Reinforcements are weeks away. Offensive guard Patrick Mekari is the closest injured reserve candidate to return, followed by tackle Anton Harrison and defensive end B.J. Green. None project as immediate secondary help. The Jaguars host the Indianapolis Colts on Nov. 1 at EverBank Stadium. Indianapolis enters the week 3-3 and has won two straight. If Jacksonville’s secondary cannot stabilize, a two-game division lead could evaporate before Thanksgiving.
