25 States Now Back Girls Flag Football as UIL Eyes Pilot

Two-conference pilot, pending state approval

Twenty-five states will sanction girls flag football by fall 2027, a pace that is reshaping what Texas school districts may need to plan for. The University Interscholastic League’s legislative council approved a proposal this week to launch a girls flag football pilot in the 2028-29 school year, capped at no more than two conferences. Final approval still rests with the Texas Commissioner of Education.

The UIL’s own superintendent survey, conducted this fall, found that 52% of Class 6A and 5A superintendents back making flag football a sanctioned sport, with 165 schools already offering it. That means a majority of the state’s largest districts are familiar with the game before a UIL season ever begins.

Outside the classroom, the sport’s institutional path is opening too. The NCAA added flag football to its Emerging Sports for Women program in January, creating a track toward championship status similar to the routes rowing, beach volleyball and water polo have already completed. The NAIA will name its first flag football national champion in spring 2027, and flag football debuts at the Olympics in 2028.

At the high school level, the Houston Texans and Dallas Cowboys have pushed for UIL recognition for years. Their joint programs are projected to reach more than 270 schools and roughly 6,000 athletes by 2027, according to the Houston Chronicle’s Jon Poorman. The two teams staged their first girls flag football state championship at the University of North Texas DATCU Stadium on June 13-14, four years after starting their own programs; Rockwall-Heath won that title over Houston Memorial, 25-6.

Carrollton Newman Smith’s Leanna Garcia (10), right with ball, attempts to maneuver away from Rockwall Heath defender Laurelea Carlyle (8) as she attempts to remove her flag as Heath defenders Reece Bouchard (12), Olivia Richard (6) and Leah Wilson (13) close in on the play during second half action. Heath won, 27-0 on Day 1 of the girls high school flag football championship tournament which was held at the University of North Texas DATCU Stadium in Denton on June 13, 2026. Higher education is moving in the same direction. Our Lady of the Lake introduced a women’s flag football program this school year, becoming the first university in the San Antonio area to do so.

What comes next depends on logistics the UIL proposal left unsettled. Monday’s plan did not place girls flag football on the academic calendar, and season timing differs widely by state. Georgia runs a fall season, with this year’s state championships scheduled for Dec. 8 at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. New York plays in the spring; last year’s state championships took place June 6-7.

That gap matters for districts weighing whether to field teams. A fall season could clash with football and volleyball, while a spring slot might overlap baseball, softball or track. School finance rules, travel budgets and coaching hiring windows will all hinge on where the UIL ultimately places the pilot.
